2013 is of course the 40th anniversary of some album or other by Oldfield. Cylindrical Chimes, I think it was called.
What (if anything) do you think should happen to mark this auspicious occasion?
Much occurred, as you know, in 2003 and with the reissue of the first Deluxe edition in 2009, another reissue would seem to be redundant.
But here's some ideas:
A tribute album feature "covers" of key sections. Come now, wouldn't you like to hear Jimmy Page and Robert Plant covering the Piltdown Man sequence? Sigur Ros opening side 2? Orbital doing the end of Side 1 with Stephen Fry providing vocals?
A one off, epic live concert - Mike on guitar? A range of "greatest hits" to follow?
A re-recording of The Orchestral Tubular Bells with a decent conductor and orchestra (Prague Symphony?) Bedford may have been an innovator and a lovely fellow but sections of TOTB are a bit of a slurry, to be frank. However, his arrangements are, for the most part, sound, and with a bit of a tweak, this could be a wonderful piece of revisionism. Please no Karl Jenkins.
Or.... just to get you riled up.... TBIV (including remnants of Telecaster)?
Waddaya think?
