Tech question:
When I will be listenig to the TB 2003 (soon...) 5.1 edited themes with a stereo amplifier, will I "loose" sound?
I believe that the 5.1 effect is to make sound "come" from 5 different directions ( guitar= left front, keyboard=right rear, bass=center....), but if it's sound recorded to be played with a 5 track amplifier I will be lossing 3 of them!
My PC has a 5.1 sound card but my speaker system is stereo.
Will I have to buy a 5.1 speaker system?

i think there's two layers in that cd..one normal stereo recording and second 5.1 recording..so you won't lose anything..i may be wrong :O

You will have to buy a 5.1 speaker system (5 small speakers + sub wooffer) if you want the surround sound effect. This may also also include the surround sound amp because although your  sound card decodes the sound to 5.1 it won't presumably amplify it unless thats built into the card someway, have a look at its spec.

Most systems are able to 'fold down' a 5.1 mix into stereo, so you don't lose anything (the same as with the older matrixed systems like SQ quad, though a very different thing was going on behind the scenes).
With the high resolution formats, DVD-A will downmix from the 5.1 channels (which can be in a way chosen by the producers, or by the player), while I believe SACD contains a separate stereo recording.
Most SACDs have a CD-audio layer which will play back in a normal stereo CD player, while DVD-A discs can contain tracks which will play in a DVD Video player, either in stereo or in 5.1 (which the player can then downmix...).

I only recently took the time to find out how SACD works, it's very interesting but possibly a bit techie even for this section of the board. Basically rather than using 44.1 kHz and 16 bits (CD quality) or 96kHz and 24 bits (the professional standard at the moment), SACD uses 282240Mhz at 1 bit. Rather than recording a value for each sample, it records whether it is rising (1) or falling (0).

If it takes off, there is going to be a lot of people that will have to change their digital recording equipment.

Of course, this isn't anything to do with 5.1 but it interested me so I though I would share.
