That would be referring to the 1989 BBC Session version made for the Nicky Campbell show, with John Peel as MC.
The description of it as being done 'by hand' would I assume be referring to the fact that his albums had become heavily sequenced by that stage, so it was a change from that, as opposed to being a change from the original Tubular Bells (which was indeed hand played!).
The account I remember reading was that it got him thinking about doing a Tubular Bells II, but he wanted to do a practice first, so he decided to revisit Ommadawn first. It seemingly went from just being Mike wanting to get back to basics to a kind of game, where the challenge was to play everything in at the right point in the music without editing, no matter how unusual the sound source. Richard Barrie told me quite a fun story about that, which I've popped into the discography!
