Only the original versions of the CD, two subsequent reissues have included the whole work.  To make sure, check the copy you're thinking of buying has a see-through spine on the front on the jewel case rather than an opaque black one, then you know you're getting the remaster. Except that the original CD of Incantations was still over 60 minutes. I think it was more to do with the technology being new and them not being able to to fit the entire double album on a CD that would play properly. Having said that all early CDs sounded like a piece of crap! And also rather than sacrificing some of the album, a double CD would have been preferable... Actually, there were such limitations in effect in the US in the late 70's/early 80's, imposed by the dominant bookstores, although being precise they had more to do with the price/lenght ratio of a book than being an unflexible limit. Also, we do have limitations in music today, when in the UK a single can only have three tracks and becomes an EP if it has more. Still, it was very stupid. Back to top

The first weeding of college notes ever and look what happens!  I recall that episode too, that it came from the publishing industry, and that it concerned the number of folds (when you open up a book, you can see little groups of pages).  Probably John Willam Tebbel's Rise and Transformation of Book Publishing in America or his series of History of Book Publishing in the United States would shed some light on it. I have some huge books from that time, too. Regarding the length of Incantations.....the shortened CD is supposed to be missing the first part of Part II, right? Does the shortened version start at the same place as Part II on the 4-CD Elements set? Incantations was one of the first CDs I bought back in the 80's and it's as complete as the vinyl. For those of us who are practically obsessed with Incantations, it's hard to think of abridging any of the original under those circumstances. I tend to like Part III much better than the beginning of Part II. If anything had to go, I'd have taken it off of that. What I'm finding great at the moment is being able to listen to the whole double album without having to move! I'd always subconsciously split this album into 4 sides and tended to 'pick a side.' Listening to the whole 72(ish) minutes in one go this morning was a whole new experience. Fantastic! Adrian Back to top
