i have a tubular bells original early vinyl album which has been pressed wrong...........it has side one ok but side two is not mike oldfield but in fact the group Gong.
is this rare???
is it worth anything???

I've never heard of this curio before so I would say you have a rare pressing. However, with Tubular Bells being sold by the truckload on vinyl you may not get much more that £10 for it. Do you have the matrix numbers scratched into the runout groove?

I bought this roughly when I was sixteen yrs old...I am now fifty yrs old,so its about 35 years old probably one of the first pressings.

Certainly a very early pressing and the value is enhanced by this fact - probably looking at £20 - £25 maybe more. A2 is obviously the second pressing of Side A but they added the first press of Side B from Flying Teapot (V2002). I assume they spotted the mistake fairly quickly but some made it out of the factory.

What is also curios is I have pressing dates from late 1974 that indicate Side B of Tubular Bells was pressed at different times to Side A. Here is the list I have:

Side B-9U = 04-12-74
Side A-9U and Side B-10U = 22-07-75
Side A-10U and Side B-11U = 22-07-75 (2 pressings on same day?)
Side A-11U and Side B-12U = 29-07-75
Side A-12U and Side B-13U = 29-07-75 (2 pressings on same day?)
Side A-13U = 20-08-75
Side A-14U = 20-08-75
Side A-15U and Side B-14U = 10-09-75
Side A-16U and Side B-15U = 11-09-75
gap
Side B-22 = 14-12-78
Side A-23 and Side B-23 = 16-06-79
gap
Side A-30 and Side B-30 = 06-03-80

Half Speed Masters done on 30-11-81
CD Master done on 14-04-85

Does it still have the Tubular Bells label on both sides?Why did you never take it back to the shop?

I can remember my mother buying a George Benson album (In Your Eyes) in the early 80`s which had ZZ Top`s Eliminator on the other side.She heard it before they kind of came to fame in this country with all those videos etc(from that album of course)The look on her face was priceless as Give Me All Your Lovin` came blaring out of the speakers.Turns out the mistake was similar to your own copy of TB.Being that the catalogue numbers were very close together.I don`t think she ever took it back to the shop either,as she`d bought it while we were visiting family in Basingstoke.She probably still has it somewhere I would guess.

Like Airborne it`s not something I`ve ever heard of before regarding any of Mike`s albums,so I would have no idea of it`s value.It`s not something I`m sure an Oldfield collector would be interested in,but I could well be wrong on that.It`s kind of amusing to think though that there may well be someone one out there who to this very day,thinks that side 2 of Tubular Bells is all about Flying Teapots and Invisible Gnomes.

was used to demonstrate hifi systems where I was an apprentice hifi engineer repairman so only side one was ever played.It is still in good condition as we HAD to look after records well at our peril.The cover is a bit bashed about .It has the correct labels on each side.They are white.

Thanks broggsy for your answer... Well, it is not a big rarity and probably only interesting to hardcore vinyl collectors as me. This item would be a nice addition to my collection and website. I would like you to consider my offer of 50 uk pounds (airmail sending included if possible). its indeed rare since i have not heard about such thing...could even be unique item if it was produced by accident when they was pressing both v2001 and v2002 albums in factory.

if you want sell it i suggest trying ebay....it could be possible it sells for high price there...maybe even few hundreds depends how many collectors want it.

good example from ebay price that surprised me when there was sold MO swedish lp box for 2200usd.
