Quote | CDV 2001 is always the original 1973 mix |
Are you sure of this? I find minor differences between the 1973 mix (which can be found on the original vinyl or the 2009 reissue of the original 1973 mix on cd) and the Virgin cd known as CDV2001.
For example, in the original 1973 master you can hear the famous background voices at 7:41 of Part One, a distinctive sudden change of equalization in overdriven guitars when Mike's playing the heavy riff in Part One, and also you can hear Mike's breath in the background while he's playing the acoustic guitar at some points. All these faults are missing when listening to the 1983 release.
Of course this doesn´t means a totally different mix, but there must be some corrections concerning background noise and equalization, and technically could refer more to mastering than mixing, but could you say they are EXACTLY the same?!
The 2009 reissue IS exactly the 1973 master, as the mentioned faults can still be heard (this means that the master -and so the mix- must have been transferred to cd as is). If you want to listen to a polished digital version of the 1973 lp, the 2009 release is closer than the 1983 one.
As this corrections also appears in the boxed edition, we could say that the boxed edition and the 1983 release might be the same except for the Sailor's hornpipe, which is from the original 1973 lp master. That means that CDV2001 is somewhat a mixture of the Boxed cleaned up mix and the 1973 original.
Since the Boxed mix is quadraphonic, the 1983 cd could be a stereo version of the Boxed, but I don't know how much has affected this to the mix (volume, panning and effects) of individual instruments in comparison with the 1973 original...
... surely I'll try to focus on this next time.
