Compiled it yesterday from mp3 to CD using the tracklist from my very first post.
It sounded ... brilliant again.
For me there's no doubt that Discovery has the best vocal numbers Mike ever wrote. Saved by a Bell is a bit cheap (Why is it Mike can't record an album without referring to Tubular Bells?) and Tricks of the Light might be a bit ... err ... light-hearted.
But To France (a bit of Steeleye Span), Poison Arrow (acoustic hardrock bits), Crystal Gazing (a touch of Clannad), Discovery (hardrock like hardrock should be) and Talk about Your Life (a clever link to To France and yet a proper song on its own) are amongst the best tracks he has ever written (if not the best).
The Lake, In the Pool and Afghan are outstanding instrumentals. And the addition of Pictures in the Dark and Legend really works.
Yummy yummy yummy ...
Sources I used were the HDCD from my brother, the Elements box track Afghan and the instrumental Tricks of the Light, the 1993 Moonlight Shadow CDS rerelease for In the Pool and The Platinum Collection for the extended versions and ... Legend, which is strangely enough on my copy as a hidden track.
A remark on the HDCD version of Discovery. The timing of the track division between To France and Poison Arrow differs from the vinyl timing. I think the vinyl seduction is more accurate.
