"The Doge's Palace" (the song) is indeed not linked to the Doge's Palace in Venice. I guess Mike named it like that because he nicked the style of Italian composer/arranger Gianpiero Reverberi and his group Rondò Veneziano, a strings-and-woodwinds studio orchestra [actually made up of musicians from Rome and... Germany ] who plays a contemporary, upbeat style of Venetian baroque music (only original pieces, mostly by Reverberi - not adaptions), with fairly heavy drums, bass, electric guitars etc. Mike's "The Doge's Palace" is very similar in style to a Rondò Veneziano piece called "Odissea veneziana" (Venetian Odyssey).
