I listened to an album from 1988, a bit before Voyager, by Van Morrison with The Chieftains, both excellent musicians (and of course there are links between Mike and Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains).  The album is called Irish Heartbeat, and it's a selection of traditional Irish songs.

Does anyone else feel or think, after listening to both, that Mike probably got a good bit of influence for the Voyager album from Irish Heartbeat?  There are two or three songs which are directly on both.

Two or three songs on both?  I can only see one, "She Moves through the Fair" which was made much more famous by Simple Minds in 1989 (Belfast Child) and is probably the most-covered traditional song in the entire British Isles so there's no reason to suppose Oldfield was directly inspired by Morrison's recording of it. Which other songs are you thinking are common to both albums? There are only 5 traditional tunes on Voyager, and of the four which aren't "She Moves through the Fair", none of them appear to be on Irish Heartbeat. But anyway, considering that Morrison didn't make a lot of this kind of music, whereas bands like Clannad did, who further have more of the new age + electronic/synthesizer angle consistent with Oldfield's own musical trajectory, it could be that they are more of a direct influence.  Then again, as you say, Paddy Moloney did play on Ommadawn and Five Miles Out, so perhaps Mike had at least a listen to this album when conceiving of and making Voyager.
