OK, our german and spanish friends do it, so why don't the Brits?

Get together and celebrate our admiration of Mike?

I was thinking of a hotel with room enough for talks on collectible recordings, or technical muso stuff.

We'd probably need a famous personality like Thom Newman or Colin, or Jeremy or Paul Harris to speak.

Maybe another room for the mvr players to network and play, then a covers band or a dj playing mike related music whilst alcoholic beverages are consumed into the small hours.

Location  - central England (although i vote for devon and it's beautiful scenery and a short walk home)

comments please

Wow, Olrac, what a great idea :) .  Please give me some notice, as
I need to:- a) save some money up b) arrange care for a disabled husband (I don't think a gathering of Mike Oldfield fans is his cup of tea).

As regards location, pretty much anywhere is fine ,as I have free rail travel (my husband retired from British Rail due to ill health).
If it's in an area where there isn't public transport then I'll have to be environmentally unfriendly and take the car.

I'd like to meet up with you all!!!     :)

Well, there are a few hotels with conference facilities within 10 miles of Hergest, at Llandindod Wells, Builth wells or Hereford. Costs seem to be around £75 a head (for an overnight stay with meals included), but I haven't contacted any yet for more details.

Next question would be the date, and then to start firming a schedule of events.

Let's see...mid-summer would be tourist season, and we probably need a good few months to organise, so perhaps late september/early October?

Events to include show and tell with our personal rare collectables; some kind of presentation; mvr network (bring own pc and track down routers?); musical evening (dj, persuade Alan to bring a guitar!!;); walk on Hergest Ridge.

First thing though is to get some idea of numbers to see if this is feasable. Or I just book up 30 rooms and make it happen.

this sounds like a very good idea, i have wanted to meet other mike music lovers! as there seems to be a distinct lack of them round these parts! hehe, and the guest speaker is a great idea, maybe even get mike to atend, after all thats what this is about, mike and his music, as long as all questions were sensible and not offensive, i think that this idea has a great chance of becoming reality, maybe try to get in contact with dark star, if they are still about, and get the word out to other fans that may not use this site, although they should, best mike site on the net!, also they may be able to help to organise the guest's etc, whatever happens, this idea deserves to come to something! well done  :D

Although this might be pushing it a bit (logistics etc), there are lots of musicians that use this site and most of them have queries that don't translate too well into words - how can I get 'that sound' ? - which FX work best - how the hell do you play that bit etc. So, if you could find people that have some grasp, you could have a sort of master class session. Perhaps a live re-enactment of the virtual 'TB finale' band could be done. All of these things are people/resource intensive however, so not so straight forward - but may be the sorts of things that would inspire more people to come.

to firm things up a bit, the location will be somewhere in wales near hergest ridge.

we will have a room for MVR players to network, perhaps invite international friends ( have to check with hotels). see MVR website for more info

a room for swap shop/show and tell with our own rarities. see .alt newsgroup for more details

musicians room, to exchange experiences/tabs/settings..
be to get a band together for an evening show. So if you have a lottery windfall of wish to spend your holiday on a wet weekend in wales and play in a tribute band, let me know. I may have a skilled producer interested in working with you. some complicted homework might be needed.

an "after-dinner speaker" lots of e-mails sent so far, to be confirmed.

I have 2 possible hotels lined up in Llandrinod Wells, within a short drive of Hergest Ridge.

One for 30 - 50 guests at £45 a single room, £36.50 a double room, plus costs to cover a guest speaker, equipment hire and band. Say £100 a head.

The other much more up-market for upto 250 guests with full audio/visual suites and wi-fi at £77 - £100 a head plus extra costs. Say £150 each.

Again, the key to making this work is getting firmer numbers of people interested, then maybe finding people to help organise the 3 main elements - musicians, MVR and general interest.

Dates would be either 24/25th september or 8/9th October 2005.

If any overseas fans happen to have a lottery windfall, or wish to spend their holiday money on a wet weekend in wales - the more the merrier.

By then we should have a new album to talk about too.

OK - i have  1, 2, 3, (takes sock of left foot) around 12 positive replies from the hundreds of UK fans.

So, is it that people are reluctant to commit until a date/location is set, or you just are not bothered?

This is a catch 22 situation. I will not book until i know there are enough interested people, but it seems you lot wont commit until there's a definite date.

the alternative is a tent in my back garden  ;)

And if you mus0's turn up, how about an acoustic version of a mike song, along the lines of johnny cash "american songs" or Gary Jules Mad World"? down tempo, might have to program drums if no real drum available.

This sounds like a brilliant idea. I'd be interested in coming along, but not sure if I can make it around those dates... I start placement around that time and they may not be happy with me skipping of to Hergest Ridge one weekend  :/

I'd like to come, but can't say for definate - perhaps nearer the time.

Well, we now have a firm prospect of the new album around september, which would give us all something to talk about. But with only around a dozen people expressing a firm interest, I'll have to scale down my ideas.

If Mike does *gasp* actually get off his butt to promote the album and tours, our money will be better spent. I also have a few family issues so...

anyone fancy August or October instead?

As I have a disabled husband, and have been given a weeks break in July,  off to Hergest Ridge and on to Warwicshire, Worcestershire,Birmingham area, have to do the "TolkienTrail" in Brum, with a friend Di. I  haven't been on holiday for five years. Last time I did go I ended up going with my parents and ended up arguing for the whole week   :( .  I can't help thinking I'm taking the mickey going away again so soon :/, but  my husband needs more care than I can provide, so perhaps I should just tell Social Services I'm going anyway, as cruel as it might sound if I just went they would have a legal obligation to care for him.

Give me plenty of notice, say a month, and I believe I could make it. I'll send a deposit to confirm my acceptance, and if we could make a weekend of it that would be great, but hey, why not extend the invite to fans all over the world? If they are in the UK at the time, perhaps they would like to take part. Hergest ridge sounds a brilliant place for the get together.
Let's invite Mike himself.....

Just this week after reading about Moonchildhippys trip to Hergest Ridge I have been talking and thinking about coming for a visit but with the new album coming out it was blaringly obvious to me that the only thing that could really inspire me to travel that far would be to see Mike live in concert. While I think August to October is a little too soon, a gathering planned around Mikes concert tour of his new album,(no I haven't heard anything but he usually likes to tour) would be ideal. We could all meet in a pub in London somewhere, go to the concert, share rooms, and spend that night and the next day, talking and playing together. I know the Dark Star team use to organise such events and possibly might do another one around his next tour.

I have a video of a Hiawatha meeting in Germany taken back in 1995, which Tom Newman and Barry Palmer attended, and everyone sat on the floor and talked and played music all night long, it is incredible, and lasted two days and Tom even managed to get Mike on the phone very briefly. It was disappointing for everyone not being able to talk to Mike directly but Tom gave the most stirring speech where he talked about Mike telling him not to go because all his fans were crazy etc and how he felt that it was really Mike who was a little crazy and what a shame it was that he can't get to know his fans in this truly intimate way.

But I live in OZ and don't have a job, so I couldn't make it in the next 3 months but if Mike was touring I would rob a bank to get there, seriously, am coming up with options as I type.

Cheers,
Tracy.

P.S.- Hergest Ridge would be lovely, ask Mike to do an open air concert there!

It seems we do have some interest, but now I got a new job. Less stress, but I'll work most weekends.

I feel that the best solution is to wait and see if a gig/tour/PA around the new album happens. Then sort out a date to meet.

Oh, and just to blow the bubble on what happens at a Mike gathering, I've posted some video of a meeting in Germany this year. Great time, too much alcohol, and some brilliant group singing to Mike's videos!

click here for some drunk mike activities in forchheim
