I've never heard of them before. The title "Studio 99 Perform Tubular Bells" looks grammatically odd, with the missing "s" at the end of "Perform".

I looked them up on eBay, and found that they also perform:

Eminem
Roy Orbison
U2
Abba
Garth Brooks

In other words, they perform EVERYTHING. Looking at the graphics of the CD, I like their take on the "Tubular Bell' idea.

Welcome to the forum!!!

I've never actually heard the whole thing, but I have heard a piece of it and do know something about it.

It's a version that's apparently turned up under various names. I know the back cover claims that Studio 99 is a group of session musicians, suggesting that some may have played on well known recordings, but what I heard sounded an awful lot like one guy with a workstation keyboard!

It's one of the releases of Going for a Song, a budget music label. They do a lot of that sort of thing, cheap CDs of cover versions, and compilations of old recordings by well known artists which no other record company wants to sell.
There are all sorts of Studio 99 releases - take a look in the 'audio preview' section, and you can hear them perform everything from Guns n Roses to Dido.

I find it funny that the advertise their use of CEDAR audio restoration processing - if they need to use those tools on a new recording, something's being done wrong...

On the grammar front, I've been told there's a difference between British and American English here, though I've never gone so far as to check for examples. Certainly in the British case, it depends on the context, whether a collective noun is treated as a singular or a plural, usually depending on whether the group is acting as a unified body or as individuals. In the case of a band, I would say it's usual to refer to them as a plural - The Who are playing in town tonight, Pink Floyd have released some great albums...and Studio 99 perform Tubular Bells. So, it's not odd to me, but that would seem to be a geographical thing!

Finally, welcome to the forum, ceron!

I've seen it go both ways in British English, as in "The BBC is" and "The BBC are". The way I think of it, a corporation is a single corporation. Going the other way, it is common in American English to say "the United States is...", which does sound rather odd to me as well.

Back on topic, in past decades there were recording outfits with names like The Longine Symphonette or The Original Artists, who had a large catalogue of covers. "Studio 99" sounds (sound?) like the same sort of thing.

Let's see if this helps...

It depends on logic and context, really! In some situations, the BBC would have to be singular - "the BBC is a large corporation" for example. In others, where "BBC" could logically be replaced by "the BBC's employees", referring to it as a plural is also possible...which isn't to say it necessarily is going to sound the most comfortable to you. "The BBC are working on a new drama series" / "The BBC's employees are working on a new drama series"..."The BBC is currently working on a new drama series" would also be fine! Some other contexts are way more clear-cut, like "The band went home to their families" being better than "The band went home to its families" (the logic being that the families 'belong' to the band members and not to the band), but "The band packed away its loudspeakers" could be fine (the loudspeakers could belong to the whole band...but there'd be nothing wrong with "The band packed away their loudspeakers" either, though that then infers more that each member took his/her own). So there you have it in a nutshell!

I bought a CD of Queen covers recently, a similar budget label production to the Studio 99 thing, just this was Gregorian Chant versions. Well, I thought it would be funny, but it wasn't - it just wasn't very good. I'm suspicious about whether the singers are proper monks, and if they are, I wonder how much of a part chanting plays a part in their order, as they don't seem to be terribly well practised at it! It sounds like a recording of amateur musicians with the reverb turned up. Shame, it could have been great fun if it was done properly. At least it was only cheap (wouldn't have got it if it wasn't!). They do a lot of things like that though, there's an Elvis one and an ABBA one too, and probably others. I think there's quite a large market for these cheap CDs. Someone I knew got a 'Beatles Disco Dance' CD once, which kind of sounded like Beatles songs played by The Pet Shop Boys. That was pretty funny, and so was quite entertaining. I wonder if some of these budget releases ever go beyond being 'quite entertaining'...

Those older cover bands like "The Original Artists", others on "K-Tel Records", etc also did a lot of covers of the first part of "Tubular Bells" to go on greatest hits collection LP's back when "The Exorcist" film came out. One of them sounded like typical background music in a Chinese restaurant.

Regardless of their status as monks, it from what you describe, I think they should have kept a vow of silence!
