Hi

I have a number of Kevin Ayers albums and CDs that I have converted to MP3 but I seem to have lost a particular favourite track.

It's a version of 'Clarence In Wonderland' that has him saying some of the lines rather than singing them. After the line 'Juilet's face was screaming with lightning' he says 'whatever that means', and after 'must have taken something' he says ' yes, that must have been what it was' (or something similar).

Can anyone help me to identify the recording? I think it must be a session recording because my memory is that it's got quite an intimate, semi-acoustic feel to it.

I'm not sure, but it could be the Soft Machine version that appears on the BBC 1967-71 CD.

Nope, it's not that one, sorry - but thanks for the suggestion. Anyone else got any ideas?

Here is the lyrics for the song Kevin Ayers : Clarence in Wonderland.

Sitting on the beach like clarence in wonderland
I had a dream and I know you will understand
Riding up the beach, it only took a moment
Along came a lady looking for amusement
She came up to me and everything was smiling
And then she said something, it sounded like a violin
Let's go to my chateau, we could have a good time
Drinking lots of sky wine
Miss juliet kate, queen of the moon
We're gonna get there soon
Gonna get there soon
There's no doubt about it
Miss juliet kate, queen of the moon
We're gonna get there soon
Gonna get there soon
Miss juliet kate, queen of the moon in june and this tune
We're gonna get there soon, soon. soon, soon

I think the song you describe is Connie On A Rubber Band. An early version of Clarence in Wonderland. Released on the album Odd Ditties.

Connie On A Rubber Band is actually a remake of Clarence in Wonderland and therefore later.Clarence was on Shooting At The Moon which as you know was the second solo Ayres album.
