Guitar - Mike Oldfield! There's not much competition actually.
Drummer - Bryan Spring. Listen to Nucleus' "Under the Sun" LP.

Bassist - Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath).

Keyboardist - I can't think of many remarkable keyboardists. Mike Ratledge of Soft Machine I guess.

Vocalists - It's difficult to compare vocalists and saying that one is better than the other. Is Leonoard Cohen a "good" vocalist?

Other Instrumentalists - Elton Dean (saxello)

OK, but I may change my mind by tomorrow.....

Guitarist -
Neil Young (feel and power);
Clarence White of The Byrds (signature country rock stringbending legend);
David Gilmour (sweet tone);
Mike Oldfield (versatility and style);
Tom Verlaine of Television (jazz/punk hybrid trailblazer);
(Damn, no room left for Roger McGuinn's signature 12 string Rickenbacker jangle and twang.)

Drummer -
Ringo (exquisite taste and feel);
Moonie (rock's greatest drumming extrovert);
Gene Parsons of The Byrds (wonderful feel and skipping fills);
George Hurley of Minutemen and fIREHOSE (punk drummers aren't supposed to sound like this! );
Bill Kreutzmann of The Grateful Dead ("when he plays it's like dancing").

Bassist -
McCartney (perfected the bass as countermelodic instrument);
Mike Watt of Minutemen/fIREHOSE (the alternative scene's legendary lord of "the thunderbroom");
Chris Hillman of The Byrds (translated his mandolin playing knowhow to the bass with great results);
Chris White of The Zombies (another undersung master of the countermelodic bass);
Mike Mills of REM (always plays what's needed without showing off).

Keyboards -
Richard Naiff of The Waterboys (both tasteful and expressive);
McCartney (knew how to write a great song on the piano and play it just right);
Ray Manzarek of The Doors (great on organ or the piano);
Keith Godchaux of The Grateful Dead (could play just about any style equally well);
Mike Mills of REM (there's much more to Mills than just the bass as his beautiful piano and organ playing prove).

Vocalist -
Michael Stipe of REM (hickory wood smoked tone);
John Fogerty of Creedence (can just about outsing anybody on the planet - power and style in abundance);
Stephen Stills (in his prime he had a voice like honey and broken glass);
Elvis Presley (especially in the late 60s/early 70s, Elvis was a phenomenal singer);
Art Garfunkel (the sweetest sound, and perfect pitch too).
(Honourable mention goes to the young Neil Diamond - incredibly uncool, but a velvet hammer of a voice.)

Other Instrumentalist -
Steve Wickham of The Waterboys (greatest folk/rock fiddler in the world);
Dave Swarbrick of Fairport Convention (the second greatest folk/rock fiddler in the world);
Mike Oldfield (multi instrumentalist wunderkind);
Ben Keith (pedal steel legend, recently departed this world, alas);
Paddy Moloney (uilleann pipe legend - what a sound! ).

This is a tricky question, because fairly obviously for any musician you stipulate in the popular area there are going to be dozens in the classical field who are ten times better. That said - and because it's much easier with the guitar than it is with other instruments to create a personal sound -  I think Mr O is in a class of his own. I'm thinking, for example, of the guitar sound he achieves on pieces like "Celt". So he's my favourite. Gilmour would be number two, for similar reasons.

I think anyone who thinks it's about musicians being "better" is kind of missing the point.  Surely we're talking about who moves you the most, not who has the best technique?  Because if it was about the latter, then I couldn't care less.

The topic was "top" musicians. I don't think it's too much of a slide from "top" to "better/best". By the way, Jules, what happened to your polar bears?

This is not a dig at Smillsoid - I completely agree with him about his top two guitar choices - but that anyone could prefer Nick Mason's drumming to, say, Carl Palmer's is evidence that questions of musicianship are absolutely redundant in pop music.

I much prefer Mason.  He's not flash but he has a beautiful feel and sense of how to support a song.  Whereas Palmer does nothing for me whatsoever.

Jules

PS  And I still don't get the polar bears reference above!

One more thought - I also prefer Mason because he's in Pink Floyd (a band I love), whereas Palmer is in ELP (a band I abhore).  You could therefore argue that my preference is biased because of this.  But I could also argue that surely we like the bands we like, in part, because of the musicians in that band and the way they play.  Anyway, that struck me as interesting....
