Olivier Group: Super Admins Posts: 1868 Joined: Nov. 1999 Posted: July 12 2011, 20:25 I may decide to properly learn electric guitar. I already play the piano, and the basics of classical guitar. I want to play like Pink Floyd, Chris Rea, and Fleetwood Mac, although the plectrum scares me (again, piano + a bit of classical guitar, you touch the thing directly). Probably not in a band. Should I get a cheap guitar first and once I kind of know, I can test for one that suits me at the shop? Or could I directly buy a nice one, would that make the learning experience better? And what effects too? I wouldn't recommend a cheap keyboard to learn the piano, for example. But it's not the same thing, guitars have more personality and buying a nice one when you don't know how to play may not make sense? Back to top

Strats are fairly easy to play compared to a lot of others. Also get some Jim Dunlop nylon picks of varying thicknesses, they last practically forever. As far as amplification, are you going to use a stand alone amp, home stereo or your PC? ex member 892 Group: Members Posts: 827 Joined: July 2008 Posted: July 13 2011, 12:17 I would recommend starting out with a inexpensive but NOT cheap guitar, somewhere in the $250-$400 (street price) range, as a super-cheap guitar can be so low-quality that it turns you off immediately. I personally have had nothing but bad experiences with Squire guitars, but I may have just had bad luck. This (Epiphone Les Paul 100) was my first electric, and I still own it today. Great beginner guitar. Or if you're looking to get something a bit more expensive, I know this (Epiphone G-400) is a good guitar. But you mentioned Pink Floyd, so maybe a Squire would be the way to go for you (just don't get one of the super-cheap ones, they will NOT stay in tune). For $500 you can get a Fender, btw. It's hard to recommend guitars to other people, as everybody is different. Hope this helps. Back to top

B.o.t  I remember a guitarist I preformed with had one of those Squires and it was just horrible....It never stayed in tune.. He later switched to an Ovation, and used various stomp pedals to good effect. Pun Intended Back to top

No difference in sound, feel or looks at all(except the headstock). Maybe the quality has suffered over the years. Mine was so perfect you could have let Eric Clapton use it to make an album and no one would know the difference. I do miss that guitar. Bought it for $179 new. Far superior to mexicans.
