Hey there everyone :)

I was wondering, what are all your personal favourites of Mikes music? I have a few joint favourites myself, including most of TB2, Songs of Distant Earth, Ommadawn and of course Tubular Bells!
Abi :)

Hi, Abi - welcome to Tubular Net, such as we are these days. :/  I hadn't logged in since May, and the unlogged flying visits weren't searching enough to see that your post had not been replied to.  As you may have gathered (and may be there already), the Facebook group set up by Caroline Monk for Mike is taking the wind out of our sails a little.  It doesn't take any less time or typing to express yourself there so, for the moment, this is not quite the social hub that I've known it to be.  I'm not Facebook-literate yet but I may leap in feet first one day.  It's not that long since I'd never set foot in a forum and seeing as you have, more heartfelt welcomes and your favourites are wise choices.  Just add bits and wholes of HR, Incantations, Platinum, QE2...

Thanks for the reply and the welcome Cavalier, I didn't think I'd get any :) It's a shame that less people are posting up here, I find forums so much easier to get on with than Facebook! The group by Caroline Monk is quite good, there was even a video message from Mike himself posted up recently!
As for your mentioned albums, good choices!! They certainly are amazing pieces of music :) it's surprising how Mike has pulled off many different styles so well.
Thanks again,  Abi

It's not taking the wind out of my sails...I've got plenty of other things to do that for me, though ;)

I almost always find questions about favourites rather difficult. If I name one, I then think of all the others I like, which is a process which cascades ever forward like a line of dominoes, until I come to the conclusion that maybe they're all good somehow. Does that mean I like Earth Moving as much as Ommadawn? Hmm...it should mean that, but I'm not sure it does. Are you confused yet? If you are, that makes two of us (or however many are currently reading this, plus me of course).

I guess I've already hinted that I like Ommadawn.I've been listening to The Songs of Distant Earth quite a bit lately - I like how it feels very carefully crafted. Then there's Amarok, of course...
I have a bit of a soft spot for QE2, actually, there's a certain fire to Mike's electric guitar playing which I enjoy in that one, plus some cool analogue synth work (which had already begun to be shifted to side of stage to make way for the Fairlight CMI by the time Five Miles Out came around). Talking of Five Miles Out, I know someone who once told me he sees that, Ommadawn and Amarok as a kind of trilogy...how's about that for a thought to leave you on?

I like FB in many ways but am so challenged to locate old posts that I've seen. I like that the forums are more organized--to the point that retro as it seems, we're going to set up one for my workplace. But getting back....I remain totally in love with Incantations. I am really grooving on "Diana - Desiderata" these days.  In case I'm not the last person to know, the lyrics are taken from Max Ehrmann’s, "Desiderata" poem and slightly modified (much like he did with Ben Jonson's Cynthia's Revels section).

“....You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, [and whatever your labors and aspirations,] in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. [Be cheerful. Strive to be happy."] * [ ] are lines in that section of the poem that Mike excludes.

I love the sentiment. I also love Mike's bassy on it!

Besides Inc, I also like Ommadawn, TSODE, TBII, TBIII, TB, FMO...hmm....it's all my favorite at some point (after Inc). It sort of depends on the day, closeness of the Moon, and my mood. :)

BTW, welcome to all the new members!

Save for the Earth Moving album, I love everything up to Amarok, and hate just about everything he's done since.

Welcome Abi.

I like 95% of what Mike has done, for me he is unique in what he does, and his guitar work is very sadly overlooked by a lot of people, but that's another thread on it's own. But I can find something I like on everyone of Mike's albums, including Earth Moving, which I think gets an unfair deal, for instance the acoustic guitar solo Mike plays on Blue Night is amazing.

I'm glad that someone else has noticed that something happened right after Amarok. Did he have a stroke? A second life-change self-help seminar? :p

I can't pinpoint exactly what it is, but TBII and onwards has a whole different attitude to them compared to the earlier albums (Heaven's Open is kind of transitional).

Short summary of my MO-preferences:

Godlike:
Ommadawn, Incantations

Semi-godlike:
Hergest Ridge, Five Miles Out

Amazing stuff:
Tubular Bells, Platinum, QE2, Crises, Killing Fields

Flawed masterpieces:
Discovery, Amarok, Islands

Has some nice stuff on it:
Earth Moving, Heaven's Open, TBIII, Light & Shade, Tres Lunas, That classical album, Voyager

Stuff I wish the guy hadn't put out, still waiting for an excuse:
Songs of Distant Earth, The Millenium Bell, TBII

Got to be Ommadawn side 1. There's nowt better made by any modern artist in my humble opinion. It's perfect.  I tend to lean towards the instrumental MO pieces anyway. Might be an idea to to nominate our least favourite tracks. Almost anything on Earth Moving would get my vote!!!

Hi all

Flying visit from me too...will reply in more details sometime...

In no particular order I'd like to say:

(a) I hate Facebook!

(b) I agree with the above "godlike" comment re Ommadawn, but would add Incantations

© Tubular Bells, utterly brilliant, even more utterly given the age of the guy...but has dated (unlike HR, O and I)...I can't really listen to it these days

(d) anything much after, hmmm, say QE2, waste of time (and yes, that includes Amarok!)

(e) Inkanta - watch this space for some more Incantations remixes. I love Diana Desiderata, but hate the Stephen Hawkins voiceover. If you or anyone else want to do your own voice version I'd be happy to mix it into a track!!

Back soon, I hope...

I will not touch Facebook or Twitter with a barge-pole.   As for Mike. Argieres, Ommadawn 1, Incantations side one (Choir and flute solo with strings) Incantations 4 (Guitar solo through to conclusion). All of 2003 Tubular Bells.
Incantations 3 (opening 9 minutes or so.) Hergest Ridge (8 minutes onwards.)  the tracks on "Fine Old Tom" 1975....
plus...the guitar solo on the Pierre Moerlen's Gong LP "Downwind.
Unfortunately, I do not like or rate any of his albums since TSODE, only the superior remake of Tubular Bells 2003 in the last nineteen years for me, I,m afraid.  I am however intrigued to know more about any Incantations remixes that might be in the offing?

I've been listening to Ommadawn side 1 the last few days and I've been thinking about this. Ommadawn part 1 would be considered a modern classic if it wouldn't have been overshadowed by Tubular Bell's legendary status. It it signigicantly better than everything else Mike has ever written and recorded (and that says something!;). Many people with an "aqcuired" taste in music have heard a bit of Tubular Bells and are misled by biographers that it was downhill from there, when he created MUCH stronger music a couple of years later. Personally I think a lot of MO career summaries are written by people who haven't heard the records. Anyone who has heard the Ommadawn instantly realizes that it's an extraordinary piece of music. Those who says it's Tubular Bells with african drummers haven't heard it.

Chris - just to be clear any Incantations remixes are all my own work and nothing to do with Mike (as I am sure you know the original mastertrack tapes are missing, so unlikely ever to produce any proper remixes). Did you listen to my Ode to Cynthia remix...and (noting your signature) I am fiddling with a "Diana" version at the moment!
