when you hear mike on radio.. what do you do??

do you turn up the volume or do you overhear it??  :)

I always be crazy for my control and turn up the volume. To night they played moonlight shadow in norweigian radio. You can watch the radio on tv. Its "sonen". Every thuesday they have music from 80's..  So to night they played moonlight shadow...

and then i wonder...
what do you do when you hear him on radio, or see a video on tv, or hear him in the supermarked???

I unfortunantly don't ever hear him played on the radio or see him on T.V. Only place i hear him is on DVD's or my CD's. It's disopointing.
BUT! i crank the volume up really loud when i do listen to him =)

Well, on the radio, I guess odds are ~60/20/20 for Moonlight Shadow/To France/Shadow on the Wall', so my reaction is usually 'oh no, not again...' ;-) - and none of Mike's made it into Radio FFN's top 750 easter charts (north German commercial radio station) since MS in 2003...
On TV, despite all those 70s/80s revival shows and music show re-runs, I have still to find something by Mike, so my reaction in this case would most likely be '%$@#, I wished I had taped that..!'
In an (electronics) supermarket, I've actually seen parts of TB and 'Don Alfonso' from the Elements DVD shown on the DVD advertisement monitors once (though nobody else seemed to care), so I watched it for a moment, just for the uniqueness of the experience...

jes that hardly true...
i remember my holiday in crete. It was on of the small supremarked there. I was shoched!! they played to be free!! Thats the only time  i ever heard tres lunas on radio. At the same time on that holiday when i left crete, there on the airport they played to france  ;)
I thought to my self.. (this would never happend in norway...)

its pretty that they dont play him more often.. and maybe play something more then just moonlight shadow ect...

I would wish that they had some more of man in rain or poison arrows maybe  :(

But vh1 is better... They often have mike oldfield greatest videos and the uncut with mike. But its been a long time ago now for sure...

pretty....

When I hear Mike on the radio, I remember it for quite a while after. It is an extremely rare event. There was a time for a while when he wasn't on the radio at all in any form for many years (TB single is ignored by oldies stations, Moonlight Shadow and others were never played in the first place, and even Hall and Oates' "Family Man" is left off oldies play lists).

For the past few years, however, I know that stations will play TB around Halloween time. That's once a year.

I hadn't heard MO on the radio since the mid-80's, when his music was played each week on the college station's progressive rock program.

I've posted something similar elsewhere, but....Until a few months back. This area's NPR station (midwest USA) acquired a new manager who hails from New Zealand. He's made an incredible number of changes including the implementation of a one-hour program called Solitude, which features quieting music, to help listeners wind down at the end of hectic weekdays. He seems to choose the music himself. Every time I've tuned in, I have heard something from Voyager (most recently this past Wed.) and one daughter thought something from Guitars. Obviously, there is so much music in the world that would fit into a one-hour program of that nature, but he chooses Mike!  I conclude that he must be a fan. Or at least a fan of Voyager. Or that's all they have at the station. :) Stuff from most of Mike's other works would fit the program's format. I still haven't written to thank him but will do so when I re-up my membership this month, and check to see what else they have or could use. :)

Volume-wise, I don't crank MO up unless I become aware that I had the volume too low in the first place. I was so startled to hear "Women of Ireland" last week or the week before, and I was on the MO IRC chat at the time mentioning that I should turn on that program (and I did, and WOI was playing!!! ), and expressed surprise and cranked it up because I thought it was a different version. But it wasn't.

When Steve Wright was the main DJ on Radio One in the mid eighties, he always seemed to promote Mikes music. I remember hearing Crime of Passion played as an exclusive on this show. He was the only DJ i recall on mainstream radio playing Mike. It always amazed me how the producers of these stations steered clear from his music just because they could not pidgeon hole mikes music into a rock, dance, techno category etc.. Its a shame that the most unique and underated British musician of the past 30 has been ignored. Now consider Mikes success across the rest of Europe...One of, if not THE most sought after artistes around.
But i still feel proud when i hear Mike on the radio and cant help telling people "this is a real musician"

I heard the first four minutes of Tubular Bells,on Monday night, As
part of "The 70's Album Show". Unfortunately this programme only seems to be put on around public holidays such as Easter/Christmas. There's another programme planned for the Mayday holiday      :) .  I heard Moonlight Shadow on t6he radio last year.  The radio station is "BBC 3 Counties Radio".
I turned the volume up!!!
I've e mailed in with suggestions for music.  The presenter reckons, he could easily do a 3 hour long programme on Led Zeppelin alone

 .

Yes. Here is a list of Mike's songs I have heard on the radio in the last 3-4 years:

Family Man
Foreign Affair
Heaven's Open
Holy
In Dulci Jubilo
Innocent
Introduction
Man in the Rain
Moonlight Shadow
Oceania
Sentinel
Shadow on the Wall
Thou Art in Heaven
To Be Free
To France
Tubular Bells '73 (intro)

And these songs have been used as background music in various Tv and radio shows:

A Minor Tune
Celtic Rain
First Landing
Hibernaculum
In Dulci Jubilo
Moonlight Shadow
Only Time Will Tell
Outcast
Portsmouth
Secrets
The Inner Child
The Song of the Sun
The Source of Secrets
The Top of the Morning
The Voyager

So I don't go crazy when I hear Mike's music on the radio, however it can certainly make my day :)

Radio in Brazil is impossible to listen nowadays Mike's tunes, but on TV as a background music is possible and does happen once on a while. Some tunes that appeared on TV as background music:

Sentinel
Family Man
Foreign Affair
The Shining Ones
Serpent Dream
Tubular Bells Part I(Introduction)

Yesterday I was in an 80's party and the DJ played Moonlight Shadow extended.I was nuts when he played that :D

When I heard Incantations in its entirety at night one year ago, I confess I was a bit surprised. :)

Hey EaToN,

Where did you here Incantations played in its entirety? The longest burst of Mikes \music i ever heard was Tommy Vance playing the first 6 minutes of crises on the Friday Rock Show back in 1983. :)

It's a not very well known Hungarian communal (?) radio that plays very diversified kinds of music, prog rock, blues, jazz, folk, world music, alternative music and everything you can imagine but it has also great talking programs. But Incantations was broadcasted at 4AM so not many people could listen to it. :)

I rarely listen to anything other than Classic FM these days. I would be dissapointed to hear Mike on the radio. The thought of some egotistical pillock (DJ) talking crap at the begining and end of his music (and usually half way through it too) is really irritating. I prefer to listen to it untouched, so to speak, on Cd or Vinyl.

I've never had such an experience, DJs in my favourite radio never offend him. Yet, I was speechless when a DJ said this:

"This was Moonlight Shadow by Mike Oldfield and Maggie Reilly. In my opinion, it is one of the very best 80s songs. Mike is a gifted guitarist and Maggie's voice is a real treasure. This song will sure appeal to people in 20, maybe 30 years."

He must be a fan.

Oh, there's a report from John Paul II's funeral on TV right now and The Top of the Morning is playing in the background. Moving.

Actually Anne, someone also mentioned Tommy Vance (an English DJ) who had a late night Friday rock show, called of all things 'The Friday Rock Show', and he never said a word till the last whisper of whatever track was playing had faded. I loved him for that. He passed away quite recently, and he and his kind will be sorely missed.
