If only one composer were involved, I'd actually go with Peter Gabriel because of his work with WOMAD and his track record in working in a collaborative, multicultural environment. Mike has worked with artists from around the world, but how much of that is true collaboration? In other words, did the resulting product change/transform because of the particular partner(s) involved, or would it have sounded pretty much the same no matter who played the piano or the percussion because Mike had a particular sound in mind?
Ideally, I'd like to see Mike and Peter collaborate on it despite their very different working styles. Hmmm...maybe one could do the opening, one the closing ceremony???
At any rate, it wouldn't hurt to find a way to email someone on the committee to suggest Mike. Does anyone know how they make these determinations? Peter's name would probably come up in a heartbeat, but Mike's may not.
