Good Day to You All,

I'm a newbie, so I'm not sure that this question has ever been raised... Or posted for that matter... So here goes nothin'!!!

As a person with traits of Bipolar, along with High Functioning Autism, I was wondering if Oldfield has Bipolar... I remember reading somewhere on line that he said that he does... But I cannot recall. I understand that his private life is to remain so... But I'm just curious...

Thanks...

Cheers!!!

Could you expand a bit more upon what it is? I'm just curious now from a scientific perspective.

Just goes to show that no one's perfect - if our great man does have this 'disorder', then he can still produce something that many people can love and enjoy.

And that surely must give a silver lining to everyone's potentially frustrating handicapped situation; those with dyslexia, or autism, even severe physical disabilities. We all have something positive to contribute.

I don't know what bipolar disorder is, but maybe this is what seprated him from other successful musicians, in terms of the spotlight.

Could this be one of the reasons for his need for the exegis treatment?

This is of course, supposing that it is true.

Arron, that's a great reply. I saw the topic also before but didn't know how to give an appropriate answer, but your post says it all...

Greetings, Stefan  :)

Welcome to the Board. Indeed, we attempt to stay away from Mike's private life. I don't know that he has ever specifically mentioned anything about bipolar. You might try searching through some of the articles reachable at tubular.net's opening page. Mike used to have a charity organization called Tonic, which helped fund psychotherapy for those otherwise unable to afford it. Here is an interview in which he discusses the hows and whys of that.

Wouldn't think so. Here is some reliable information on bipolar.

I am no doctor (and I heaven't followed the links some of you have offered), but as far as I know bipolar disorded is a severe thing and I doubt Oldfied has it. One women I know that has it is hospitalised every now and than and is under constant medication.

From what I know about Olfdiefd's personality, I think he is more suspicious for some mild autism.

I don't know the true definition of Bipolar Disorder but it sounds to be a very serious condition. I always understood it to be similar to Manic Depression ( which I believe Robin Williams suffers from) in that people experience severe bouts of depression followed by high levels of anxiety and activity or andrenilin, that sort of thing, but I could be confusing it with Manic Depression. The point is though that these disorders come in all forms and with the stresses of todays society they are more and more prevelant. I think we all know more than one person who suffers from mood swings or anxiety, I attend anxiety classes myself, and they are all interelated or under the banner of 'mental illness' perhaps which is certainly not a flattering title. But it is fairly common and while Bipolar seems maybe a little severe I don't doubt Mike suffers from some sort of anxiety or depression but depending on the individual these things can be treated or dealt with in many different ways, and many people can suffer from symptons such as these and not allow them to take over their daily lives or make them incapable of functioning in todays society. Whatever spurred Mike on to throw himself into the limelight and put himself through that torture in his delicate condition at the time is beyond me, and  only he knows if it changed him into the person he is today. Not even he knows how his life would have turned out otherwise. I digress.

Yes - it's exactly the same thing.

It's not necessarily a severe thing - most sufferers wouldn't be hospitalised regularly, if at all...and it's likely a lot go undiagnosed. It's not too uncommon a condition amongst performers, and creative people in general.

I'd prefer to keep away from 'diagnosing' Mike here, though.

I think my sister could be Bipolar but she has never been diagnosed with it, she does suffer from mental illness though, anxiety, agoraphobia, mood swings, self abuse etc.

Not entirely true actually.  You can get different strains of the illness.  ADHD can be a link to the disorder.  It just means that they can have good days/weeks and bad days weeks.  They can be very 'sunny' , and then for little reason they can become very low, to the point they may not even want to get out of bed. They can become irritable, moody.

Some people with manic depression can be ok for upto five years, and then can become ill again.  It's something wrong with the brain chemistry, and is more usual in women.  It is not the same as REACTIVE DEPRESSION, which is caused by events in a person's life.  To be honest some celebrities are mis -diagnosed with manic depression, when infact it is not, it is reactive depression.

I personally think Mike Oldfield does not have manic- depression.

Many people would say that Mike's mood swings are a sign of this, but things are really different from each other.Nope,I don't think he's bipolar, but a moody person.
