I max out at two . TB and Discovery on vinyl and CD, HR as purchased download and CD. Two CD's of Voyager (can't remember why, it's not my favorite! ). I suppose Islands might count as three as I have the Album (vinyl), Wind Chimes VHS and elements DVD.

Anybody beat 2 (or 3)?

My immediate response was to say that I have one only of each (because I got rid of all my vinyl), but then I suddenly realised that I have an old cassette of Songs of Distant Earth in the car, which I bought somewhere in the transition period between LP and CD for a reason which now escapes me.

So I have two copies of TSODE, but that's it.

Well I sold most of the vinyl after I replaced them with the cd versions.Although that was mainly down to my own financial situation at the time.I did keep Boxed though and Platinum, because my vinyl version featured the alternate Sally track.I have got two cd versions of Hergest Ridge & Ommadawn as I decided to buy the remastered versions a few years back.So in effect including the vinyl,I suppose I do own three copies of those two albums.

Hmm... I have Tubular Bells, Incantations, Discovery and The Complete on both LP and CD. Other than that it's the 2000 reissues, plus a few compilations and the 25th Anniversary edition of TB.

Most i own twice,or in a couple of cases 3 (vinyl,cd,2000 remaster). However the original i have 3 times (Dad's very scratched '73 copy,2000 remaster and Elements Box version).I did have the original cd version but i gave to a friend who wanted and introduction to Mike (i call it a public service)and i also had the 25th Anniversary Edition.Still got the damn box but left the disc in a friends cd player.DOH.
I have had to buy Amarok 3 times though cos my copies all got scrathed.

Oh and yes i have Islands 3 times for exactly the same reason as Matt.Which is odd cos i'm not even that fond of this one,but as an obsessed kid i had to but The Wind Chimes as soon as i saw it on VHS.

I stopped buying vinyl after the "Pictures In The Dark".  So everything prior to that is duplicated, except for 2 vinyls of "The Complete MO" (different track listings for different countries), and several vinyls of "Tubular Bells".  Also grabbed 7" picture discs whenever possible, as well as the corresponding 12" EP equivalents.

Slight thread-jack: Bought Voyager CD twice-first copy was some dumb rap album.

Slight thread-jack, part 2:  My very first copy of TB was on CBS/Columbia.  Go figure.

I have NONE, zero, zilch, nada,  ... ...   :D

I have ripped all my cds in highest quality to my harddisk and given my sister them all..(or course I have an extra online back-up for the files, in case of computer hardware failure)
My computer is a virtuel media center and a play my music from that. When I need it to go - I just copy to my mp3player.
No cd´s with broken surface is in my house   :)

I have three copies of The Complete (two as "2-in-1", one as an ordinary double CD), two copies of Ommadawn (Virgin and Disky), two copies of Heaven's Open (Virgin and Disky), two copies of Hergest Ridge (both Virgin), two copies of Light + Shade, two copies of Tr3s Lunas and four copies of Amarok, two original and two remastered, all Virgin. Please don't ask me why. :D :D

Yeah, I forgot all about my regular edition CD's, prior to the 2000 Remasters.  Had quite a few of them, and got rid of them (idiot, I am!).  I even had the old Caroline edition of Discovery.

I keep all my vinyl.......records that is. Why not? I found stuff like "The Consequences of Indecisions" that way. And took substantial effort to procure the Porky Cut 1974 100% organic HR from a dealer on amazon, convinced that any cassette copy was a post-boxed remix(1990 I think the cassette was released). I think all my vinyl was saved for a reason(what existed of it in 1979 was saved from a flood by me frantically hauling it all into the attic, wise!;). Interesting story for another time(yeah I know, thank God, Jim). But if it all was worth saving, it was for HR, Ommadawn and Incantations. Don't sell your LP's, at least not the tubularian ones. Yesterday's art is now an artifact. Take the ifact out, you still have the art on MP3 or CD. But those arent fun to look at! Let alone preserve.....

I've put all my MO on my computer, as well, but I won't give away any of the actual CDs. I think The Caveman also mentioned giving away CDs, and now I'm wondering what I would do if someone asked for one of my MO CDs...
  • If it's a specific one and it's just to borrow (and they're trustworthy) then I'd part with it for a few weeks before I'd start the hounding gimme back phone calls.
  • If they just want to give MO a try, I'd burn a compilation disc (or two, or three) for them.
  • But, what if they decide they like MO and ask me to burn copies of entire albums for them? Should I do it or should I tell 'em 'buy your own!'?

But it's all moot anyway.

Oh, and your comment has got me curious, yanouch65. Just how many do you have??

About 20 vinyls, 23 cds, 1 mini-disc, 1 reel to reel tape, 1 DDC cassette, 2 8 track, 3 cassettes.....just about Tubular Bells

Can you imagine the rest regarding the 23 other albums?

;)

Ha! Yes, I'm a believer now Tati.

Yannick, (or did I see you addressed as 'Mr Y' elsewhere?) your mention of a reel-to-reel tape has reminded me that I used to be fascinated by my brother's player. I thought it was a beautiful piece of equipment and simply watching the movement was, perhaps, as mesmerizing as a revolving LP.

Ah yes...that in turn brings back memories for me...

My first encounter with reel to reel tape was with the mighty Studer A80. The transport path was fairly sophisticated, to ensure a stable tape speed...I loved watching the tape snake around all the rollers and pulleys (not to mention all the editing paraphernalia - the chinagraph pencils, reels of different colours of leader, rolls of splicing tape, razor blades, the pained howls of someone who'd just cut their fingers instead of the tape...).

Anyway, to go back on topic...I must say I only have the very vaguest clue of how many copies of certain things I have. I don't exactly deliberately collect things - that is to say, I've never been one to have a want list and go in search of the items on it. I just tend to acquire things, and I'm often surprised, when I start to count, at just how many things I've managed to accumulate.
It's been a few years since I bought a vinyl record, I think, but it used to be a favourite occupation of mine to go idly wandering around second hand record shops, in moments that would otherwise have been filled with boredom, seeing if there was anything I liked the look of. I normally just used to buy anything I hadn't seen before, so I've ended up with a motley collection of all sorts, from the commonplace to the decidedly rare.

I suppose the album I probably have the most copies of is Tubular Bells, if you count Boxed and the Elements boxed set as being copies of it. I think I can count 10. That's frightening, actually. There are some I only have one of...a lot depends on what I happened to find on my expeditions. I can only say in defence of the 'collection' that it takes up a whole lot less space than, say, a collection of musical instruments...erm...*cough*...not that I'd know anything about that. *innocent whistle*

I don't collect but have some duplicates....i.e., four copies of Incantations: The original vinyl copy and three CDs--two of those are remasters. That doesn't include the Exposed vinyl and CD or DVD. When I bought the remastered version to hear the noise (haha) I also got a "circulating" copy to lend to friends. Only one person actually borrowed it and she returned it after a couple of years. I uploaded Inc to my iPod, which is pretty much how I listen to music these days, sad as that may be (or not).
