Slung together in one arena are contestants of various shapes and form's belting out dodgy, cheese coated song's to win the ultimate prize. There is no escape from it. It is so big here, if you look at cars on the road, 50% of them(Mazda, Chevy, it does not matter what company) come with this........chrome cow-head emblem installed on the back of the trunk, or some clearly visible place. I have this comedic "vision" in my head where I go to buy a new car. The paperwork is all done, I'm ready to sign for this new car. Dirk Star Group: Members Posts: 1331 Joined: Sep. 2007 Posted: May 21 2008, 03:03 Eurovision is just one of those yearly events that is so amazingly bad you just can`t help but watch it.Made all the more entertaining in this country at least.By Terry Wogan`s constant mickey taking peppered throughout the proceedings.And all the ridiculous vote shenanigans as well kind of makes you proud to be English for a change.Even if it just goes to prove how universally loathed we are within our own continent. By way of making last years competiton a little more interesting we decided to set up a sweepstake between family and neighbours.My six year old son was well into it.Writing down all the countries and setting up his own star system next to every song performed etc.He was like Katie Boyle on acid or something.Absolutely hyper with excitement as if it was Christmas Eve all over again.The problem was that the following night he steamed into the room with paper and pencil in hand waiting for it all to kick off again.I think he thought it was some kind of reality show that was going to run for about 2-3 weeks or something.OMG imagine that 24 euro cheese fests every night for almost a month!!!....To say the kid was devestated would be putting it mildly. Anyway it was first semi-final night last night and straight away he was like.."Oh yes I love this!" He could`nt wait to get the paper and pencil back out again and start scribbling down his critical musings.He was`nt too happy when Ireland did`nt get through mind with their "singing turkey" entry.But I`m sure he`ll get over it in time for the second semi-final tomorrow night. You will kick yourself, when I remind you that it was renamed several years ago to The Eurovision How Many Adjacent Friendly Neighbouring States Do We have Contest. (For the uninitiated, this is due to the voting system). As mentioned above, alcohol does help you get through this annual event, as does the realisation that the objective for the contestants is to come up with the worst, the wackiest or the most riddiculous act - Spain was particularly successful in this regard this year, but unfortunately due to a quirk of geographical position, didn't have a chance of winning. (no offence intended to my Spanish friends). Meanwhile home country (the UK) missed the point completely and dissapointingly entered a fairly normal and reasonable pop song, which gave us little opportunity to laugh at it and consequently it came last. Perhaps it may have had more of a chance if the officials had mis-heard all of the votes for the Ukraine as the UK So all in all it was another classic show, in that it was complete rubbish from start to finish, but it is a torture that we Europeans it seems must put ourselves through each year. Hopefully next year I will remember to switch the tv off and go and play my bass instead. Though I can't help thinking that as I finish my first song, a member of my family will shout 'nil point' from the other room. :-) -------------- Clotty Back to top

I think you do have to question the UK`s continuation to fund this nonsense though.Especially seen as because it`s from the BBC we`re actaully subsidising it ourselves.Along with France,Spain & Germany we`re supposedly keeping this thing afloat financially.I`m sure most of the rest of Europe probably feels the same way as well in all reality.I don`t know about Terry but Eurovision has been on it`s deathbed for years.Time to pull the plug! I don't see why we should continue to fund this nonsense; it's a complete waste of money as it is not a contest at all. When entries like the German song - sung completely out of tune - beat us and we end up last with a relatively good song and sound performance, amidst such mediocrity and some songs that were just so dire, one feels that the UK is having the urine forcibly extracted in the most painful and humiliating way.   -------------- “A dog is not intelligent. I do wonder about Britain's position in Europe, I think we're so hated, especially the English , even our own government hates the English ,apparently  England no longer exists to the EU, but Wales, Scotland , and Northern Ireland/Ulster are all regarded as their own areas, rather than being Britian, I won't say Great Britain as the Great went some years ago.  I don't think our governments position on the Iraq war in '03 helped our reputation. Speaking of fuel prices I was sent a great text by my boyfriend BREAKING NEWS!!!!! Out of a Morbid curiosity I will be watching..:)..
