From Félix Mercader on http://www.mikeoldfieldblog.com

http://www.mikeoldfieldblog.com/2008....-la-luz

" I just received one of the most incredible items for my Oldfield collection.

A number of acetates what appears to be the part of a project for an unedited compilation in South Africa untitled "Singing Belles" (circa 1985).

In all the acetates I have received, I listen to the songs : Five Miles Out, Moonlight Shadow, To France, excerpts from the long instrumental pieces ...

...BUT THERE IS A SMALL INSTRUMENTAL EXTRACT I 've never heard !!!!!!!

Please download the following file from my site:

http://www.argiers.com/blog/UNRELEASED.ZIP

You'll find a photo with one of the labels. Also, and very interesting, you'll find a letter from internal communication among employees in South Africa who spoke with Virgin on the process of creating this album...

...and a sound archive : WhatIsThis.mp3

Please help me... What's that song ? "

Some people think it's an unreleased extract from the Killing Fields sessions or a demo from Ommadawn (Part 2)... or maybe it was a mistake and this is not Mike at all...

It sounded like pre-exegesis MO to me - particularly the orchestral Hergest Ridge.

Hello dear Happy Félix!
I'm afraid this compilation acetate...as well as all those South Africans acetates...are fake.
I mean, why would there be ONLY into THIS country so many acetates with all these strange tracklistings...that were NEVER released anywhere in the world?????
Examples of 7'':

Evacuation / Requiem For A City
See the Light / Innocent / Nothing But / Far Country
To France / Crystal Gazing / Poison Arrows / The Lake
Crises / In High Places / Moonlight Shadow
Etc...

My poor Felix, don't you think that you are being cheated by someone who has a vinyl printer?
Sorry to see people who behave like this South African seller!!! :(

Kind regards from Paris, my Friend!  :)

Intriguing.  But it could be anyone, and anything.  If I understand the letter correctly, the references are to a proposed tribute album.  Perhaps this is someone's tribute to a "Killing Fields" style of tune.

With acetates it's so hard to know for sure what's legit and what's not.  Regardless, two things seem clear.  First, the extract is not at all "christmasy" (nor would be anything connected to "The Killing Fields").  Second, it's not likely that some lower lever Virgin rep would address Branson as "Richard" (in fact, there is no indication of a Virgin letterhead on the paper at all-it appears to be a radio station's or programming company's logo).  Of course, Branson isn't the only Richard in the world, either.

Don't you love little mysteries?  Hmmm...

Not so sure of that, bassman - it would be very much in the Virgin style of doing things (which is very much against the formal or the "stuffy". Virgin is my mobile phone provider, and if I accidentally press the wrong key when retrieving my 'Vmail', I'm asked whether I'm "slightly tipsy"!;).

Hello all. I'm posting this on behalf of Félix, who can't seem to be able to post here today.

Thanks for dispelling the mistery, BlueTape :)

Octavio

Hi there

I'm Felix. I can't post, I don't know the reason. I logged in with my password, but all the time: "Sorry, you do not have permission to reply to that topic", so I asked Octavio to help me to send an answer with his user.

Well, first at all, thank you very much for finding the solution. Of course seems it is not Mike. Excellent job ! Thanks :-)

Answering Atane about fakes acetates or not... well, I have many reasons to be sure they are not fake. I can write a lot of reasons why I do think so. But well, everybody can have his own oppinion, no problem.

If you check my acetates from southafrica in www.argiers.com, of course they are not the common acetates that someone can imagine, the ones which were used for mass production. I do think that in southafrica they were used for different reasons: promotional purposes in radios or shops (some of them have promo writtings), some maybe were used for internal company use only. As you, I also think it is rare to see this unique song combinations, but again, the purpose of them in SA was different than in other countries.

Another comment about Southafrican Mike Oldfield pressings... Do you know about these two normal 7'' oldfield vinyl singles from Southafrica ?

1) Pictures in the Dark / Legend --> the song Legend has the two extracts in reversed order ! Why ? Who knows ! A mistake ?

2) promotional Tubular Bells / Tubular Bells catalogue number v.2001 --> I would like you to listen to it. It has the master of ceremonies on both sides... but both sides starts with incredible two drum beats !! It doesn't happen in any other edition. And this is not an acetate... it is a normal 7'' vinyl single that you can find in Rainer's discography or in my website.

I mean that in Southafrica they never were very strict with oldfield music... they did what they want.

The seller is stealing my money ? I can't be sure, but I don't think so. If they are fakes, they are really really well done ! I have some info sheets with a lot of details. If they are fakes, the seller has really a big imagination. Also I can tell that the seller is selling other artists and I can tell you than other collectors (not oldfield) are paying tons of money to him, so a lot of people ( including me! ) is very very stupid.

Again, I do think they are not fakes... Anyway, you proved that extract were not Oldfield music... maybe someone can prove these acetates are fakes ? If someone can, please do it !!!!!!

regards

Hello ! Here Felix. It seems I fixed my problems with this website and I can post again :-)

Great job to find it is not an oldfield extract ! Thanks !

If you check my website, southafrican section:

http://www.argiers.com/s7suda.html

and

http://www.argiers.com/m12suda.html

you will see a lot of acetates, and I can understand if someone thinks that they are fake. I hope not, because I'm paying for them a lot of money !

Anyway Atane, check them again globally. You will see different firm sleeves, different labels, different sizes (I even have a 16'' children of the sun acetate... it is really big... it doesn't fit in my turntable!;). Company letters as well... If they are fakes, the seller is really a genious.

And I know that the seller is selling acetates by other musicians much more expensive than to me. Because these other musicians are bigger successful than Oldfield. So a lot of collectors worldwide are being stolen ? Maybe yes, maybe no, but I need a prove that they are fakes, not just an oppinion.

I do think that if the seller is a thief, then why to do acetates with this rare song combination ? if he has a machine, then he can do a "standard acetate", with complete side A of ommadawn or Tubular Bells for instance. Then sure people can trust him more. Why to do these rare song combinations ?

Anyway, if you check company letter of "Singing Belles", you will read about this "song combinations", so there is a reason that you can read there !

Too much imagination needed to invent them, it is my oppinion.

I do think they were genuine in South Africa, probably for internal use only, not for mass production. But not fakes.

It is my oppinion until someone can prove it something different :-)

it looks like those acetates are gotten from one source....i personally never spotted any of them from ebay or other big vinyl sites.

for me its quite odd for me that so many acetates are found from south africa only...more total than from all other countries together?

if i had vinyl carving machines i would make some bootleg live shows as vinyls :P

I was once actually thinking how much it would cost to get 200 vinyls pressed with printed label and cover and came to price ~1500 euros total...would be cool to make such press like TB3 vinyl edition and sure would sell fast...why Warner dont do such thing there is no doubts that in example 500 vinyl limited press wouldnt sell for collectors.
If i had chance to do that legally, i would do it ;)

Hello Hifiguru... these oldfield acetates never appeared in ebay because I bought them first :-)

But in ebay appeared ! Not oldfield but other musicians ! Check for instance this Gary Numan acetate from south africa... final price was 770 uk pounds:

I'm just not understanding the infatuation fans have with acetates.  If it's a rare finished track then I can see it.  But if it's some crappy demo fragment, or a pirate copy of a track that's already available on legit vinyl or CD then why would a collector part with their money?  As a work of art?  Uh-uh, acetates are usually primitive, hand-written affairs.  As a memento?  Maybe, if it's authenticity can be verified.  But if you're talking about authenticity and E-Bay in the same sentence, then you may as well just throw your money out in the street.

I'm a bit of a collector myself, but when it comes to music, the only practical purpose to having multiple copies of a track is in the search for the finest possible fidelity.  MO's signature on the "Pictures In The Dark" vinyl EP (to use that as an example) might look nice, but does it make the song sound better?  No, your sound system doesn't care.  Does it make you a more devoted fan?  No, just one with more disposable income.  Does the piece in question have any more intrinsic personal value to you?  No, unless you got it from the man himself.

In all my years I've debated the subject of collecting with myself endlessly, because I've breathed a lungful of the same air, too.  It seems to me that most collectors gather their trophies with the intent of personal or public display, as though the music had become pieces in a museum.  I can't think of a sadder fate for a piece of beautiful music than to become an artifact.

Maybe the acetates in question here are the only products available.  But I don't get that impression from the postings here.  Does anyone out there actually play their vinyl acetates?  In lieu of available CD's or mp3's to play, I guess that would be the only choice.  But I don't get that impression here, either.

Collecting certainly can be fun, as long as you're not lining the pockets of some anonymous crook who laughs his head off every time he reels in a fresh mark.  To each his own, I guess.

Many "crappy demo fragments" give a unique insight into the creative process. There's nothing more fascinating (at least to me) than hearing raw mixes or alternative versions of songs you know and love. I would pay for things like that if it's authentic.

I mainly agree with you, but I'm not going to get into a debate on how bootlegging affects recording artists.  If demos are put out with the artist's permission, then that's obviously fine.  But that's not really what we're talking about here.  At least that's not what I was talking about.  I enjoy the peek into the creative process, too.  But I'm not going to spend exorbitant amounts of money on acetates of dubious legal origin.  They are usually not made to stand up to more than a few playings.

"If it's authentic" would seem to be the key words here.

I'm not 100% sure if these acetates are authentic or not, but of course I think so. If not, I would not pay money for them.

Of course I can understand all doubts because they are very "rare" acetates (unique song combinations for instance). I have other acetates from UK or USA (check them in my website if you want) that they seem much more genuine in a first look. Why ? because there is a complete album recorded (for instance ommadawn from usa) or a final single (ex. blue peter from uk).

Anyway, about why I collect or I don't... well, anyone has his reasons. I enjoy doing it. I enjoy with my vinyls, labels, covers, stickers, insert, acetates, testpressings... I prefer to spend my money here than drinking beer or buying expensive clothes.

There are no more reasons... I enjoy doing it. The day I don't enjoy, then I stop. But I don't think that will happen... But never know !

One reason that I can understand for collecting those "artifacts" and ugly looking/sounding acetates is the historical value; they're basically an item that displays the long, long workings of putting out a piece of music. I can see that as being quite rewarding, because there's so much going below the surface that is quite hard for us to imagine it. I was fascinated reading a story posted on discogs.com of a guy who accidentally bought the "glass master" of Aphex Twin's first ever released record, Analogue Bubblebath, as a regular copy. That must be a quite amazing thing to happen. It's a piece of history, you know - a frozen moment, a seed of something big to come. Could be fun. :)
