"The complete singles collection"

CD1
Mike Oldfield's single/Don Alfonso/In Dulci Jubilo/Portsmouth/William Tell Overture/Cuckoo song/Guilty/Blue Peter/Arrival/Sheba/Five miles out/Family man/Mistake/Moonlight shadow (extended mix)/Crime of passion (extended mix)/To France (extended mix)/Tricks of the light/Etude/Pictures in the dark (12" mix)/Shine (7" mix)/In high places

CD2
Islands (extended mix)/The time has come (extended mix)/Flying start/Magic touch (Max Bacon vocal)/Earthmoving (disco version)/Innocent (12" mix)/Holy (Hard and Holy mix)/Heaven's open (12" version)/Sentinel (single restructure)/Tattoo (radio edit)/The Bell (single version)/Hibernaculum/Let there be light (Hardfloor video edit)/Women of Ireland (Lurker edit)/Man in the rain/Far above the clouds (Timewriter radio edit)/To be free/Thou art in heaven (Soultronik radio edit)/Tubular Bells 2003 Introduction

I've made this compilation using Winamp's Media Library function (very useful for compilations) and after playing it a few times decided that it should actually get released instead of the truly useless "Collection" (which brought us oooh, so many rarities, i.e. Pictures in the dark). Alternatively, these two CDs could form half of a boxed set that would be slightly more interesting than "Elements". Shame it will never happen because Virgin and WEA don't exactly seem eager to pay each other for using their tracks...

I agree that there should be a Mike rarities/singles comp.  But I would definitely make room for Argiers, Pipe Tune, The Path and Wreckorder Wrondo and Argiers on Disc One.

These were b-sides, though -- my compilation simply collects all single a-sides.

Ah right, sorry - I hadn't noticed that!

I think a lot of the fans would want something that collects together everything not on the regular albums.  Some of those b sides are pretty hard to find.  And some of them are darn good too!

'Elements' boxed set was a nice chance to do that. Of course, it didn't happen. Then 'Collection' -- frankly speaking, I've no idea who thought that tracklisting up, but that person must be evil -- it has ONE track that wasn't available on CD before. I'm now waiting for 'Collection 2' consisting of Orchestral Tubular Bells, disc 2 of Complete Mike Oldfield and 'Shine' :P

You could also add the Flying Start 12" mix, for its rarity value. It's just the same as the normal one, with an instrumental opening tacked onto the beginning, of course, but still something that a lot of people wouldn't have, so making the compilation that little bit more attractive.
The Guilty 12" version would be good to have on there too.

Though it wasn't an A Side, you could swap In Dulci Jubilo for the 'for Maureen' version, again bringing in something which hasn't been heard a lot. Including something like the 'Dutch' mix of Blue Peter could also be good.

I think that something which collects together some of the alternate versions of these otherwise familiar tracks is a good idea. I would personally leave out those which are easily available on albums though, and go for B Sides instead, were I producing this as a compilation aimed at fans.

Well said Mr K.

I like that 12" of Flying Start - when the regular beginning kicks in it's quite unexpected.

The For Maureen version of In Dulci Jubilo would be nice to hear on a remastered CD instead of old crackly old vinyl.  Ditto Pipe Tune and the 7" singles of Tubular Bells and Ommadawn.

Lord knows we'd all buy such a compliation in our droves!

Navaira, are "Five Miles Out", "Sheba", and any others that are on regular albums where you don't mention special mix or length really that much different from the album versions?

Basically I used tracks I have; I don't own Guilty 12" mix and I think the instrumental opening for Flying Start (extended) is rather... eh... discardable. Also, this compilation is 80:30 (CD1) + 78:15 (CD2) so I can't add much more. Oh -- I also realised for some reason I do not have Sheba anywhere apart from the live version on Complete (I still miss some regular albums -- I have them on cassettes and didn't buy CDs yet).

If I do not name a particular mix it means I used the album version (in most cases it's because that version was also the main track on the regular single and I didn't have any other mix to replace it with).

I would buy that compilation at once....
What a pity that I can only stare on your post, Navaira, knowing that this will never happen in reality....
