hi to all of you!
i must be the newest member and i just wanted to get started at the board.
And just a small addition to the ethical(?) problem with internet downloads and copy protection on cds:i started listening to mike oldfield's music through the internet, first just trying how it was and so on,but i have got really hooked on it and now have a bunch of original cds. :p So i don't think that internet downloads have to be drastically elliminated. They can be used to promote music (you try and if you like you buy!)at least that was what happened with me...
Anyway...
cheers to all of you!! ;)

Hi Lady Starlight, welcome to our board,it's a nice place to be,as for the CD debate, your right, the thing is it's not everyone who is into ilegal downloads from the net,but like everything,it's the small minority who ruin it for the rest of us,although i am getting tired of this whole debate,i do feel now would be a good time for the people who sell CD's to reduce there price a bit, because i don't care what anyone says,we all want the real product!!.but they are and always have been overprised, they cost peanuts to mass produce,we all know that. So,maybe they should give up with a war they can't win,ie,ilegal downloads, leave that to the FBI ;) and lower the CD prices, they might sell more,i know Tesco sell chart only CDs at £9.97,but that is only chart cds,it should be on all CD,and even lower in price than that!!!

Hi LadyStarlight & welcome
I just joined 2 days ago, so I'm pretty new here too. I have read a lot of the messages posted before though & like qjamesfloyd am somewhat tired of the copy protection debate(I have had a lot of them ;) ).
Anyway I feel the same was you do about downloading music of the internet. I want the real project, & would buy any cd, that I like rather than downloading it. I only download to become familiar with music I have not heard.
So for people like us, I think copy protection is dumb to have. But like qjamesfloyd says its a few that ruins it for the rest of us, I also think CD's are overpriced. I am however against the idea of getting anything worthwhile for nothing, as I think bad consequenses will follow in the long run.
I would personally prefer if only portions of songs are listed on the internet, to inform us of the product & help us know if we wish to buy it.
My solution would be to be able to download every song for a small fee of perhaps 50 cents, that way we only get what we pay for, & the artist will get paid too.
Who knows where it all will lead to. But I shure think it is a mess now, with so many people burning cd's illegally & companies making CD's copy protected....

Let me tell you this: I wouldn't have to search the Net if everything I like was for sale in a regular shop.
It isn't by far.
Finding musical gems still feels like I've struck gold.

BTW a warm welcome to both of you.

Thanks for the welcome Jael.
I'm really like this site so far, so many nice people. I've heard it said that music is the language of the soul, & if so, I believe many of us here will have a bit in common.
I agree with what you said finding quality music can be very tough. Here in the U.S. I have a hard time even finding an Oldfield cd & can't even find much by Mark Knopfler, The Pogues & so many other groups I listen to.
Yes I by no means feel sorry for the music companies. I feel sorry for the fans & artist, who are being ripped off by greed & are given little outside of mainstream music available to them.
