Well here's a weird little tale that makes me think there is slightly more to this world than meets the eye. My brother who is 5 years older than me got me heavily into MO round about 1986/87. He had the Complete MO plus an old copy of TB that used to belong to my auntie. Anyway we very much grew up sharing the same taste in music back in those days and I still send him copies of Mike's recent albums. So where is all this leading?

Well my brother was a pilot in the RAF but left earlier on this year to join Virgin Atlantic. About 30 mins ago I got a text message from him saying he had just flown his first ever Boing 747, and the name of that Boing 747? You guessed it - Tubular Belle.

WEIRD OR WHAT?

And I've just noticed that this strangely enough is my 1000th post here at tubular.net.

Flying start or Heaven's open would be great names for planes as well! But don't call it Earth moving! ;)

There are plenty of other good names for airplanes:

"Airborne"
"In High Places"
"The Voyager"
"Top of the Morning"
"Far Above the Clouds"
"To Be Free"
"Sunlight Shining Through Clouds"
"Broad Sunlit Uplands"
"Firefly"
"Bridge to Paradise"
"Weightless"
"Sunjammer"
"Four Winds"

And how about:

"Spruce Goose Flaps its Wings"

"Landfall" would not be a good one.

"The Watchful Eye" would be good for a spyplane. You could even paint "Eye in the Sky" on the other side.

Branson has named a plane after me, how sweet, I've never even met the man. Do you think it is too late to tell him there is no space between Tubular and Belle.

Could he be still trying to make money off Mike or is this a respectfull tribute. It seems a bit weird after 30 years and Mike no longer even being with the company. But I bet it was a thrill for your brother being a fan, is it a new plane?

Congrats on your 1000th post too.

I too have a strange story with a connection to Mike :) .

Five years ago I went on holiday to Devon.  Whilst there I travelled behind former Great Western Railway 1400 Class tank locomotive No.1420, on the South Devon Railway.  The SDR is a preseved railway that operates between Totnes and Buckfastleigh.

Travel forward in time five years to July this year and  my next holiday in Kington.  Whilst browsing in the bookshop in Kington one of the books I bought was "The Facility Of Locomotion - The Kington Railways" by J.B.Sinclair and R.W.D. Fenn.   I opened up the first page of the   book to find a picture of 1420 at Kington. 1420 spent her working life in and around the Kington area.
How strange is that :) ??? Coincidence or something more???  No I do think I was meant to go to Kington    :).

For those of you puzzling over GWR 1400 Class, here's a link to some pictures  of 1420, looking resplendent in later British Railways black livery.  Doesn't she look smart :) http://www.southdevonrailway.org/1420.html

Initially I thought, wow! But thinking about it, planes are kinda tubular so maybe someone completely non-related to Mike and his career chose the name

WOW!!
That plane thing is weird.  I have noticed coincidences in my own life have been increasing over the past year or so and they are more unbelievable.  Is the celestine prophesy coming true??

That is sooo cool! Glad to know that she's still in service! In looking through the history of Virgin Air, Tubular Belle was one of the first Boeing 747-400 series introduced to the Virgin Fleet, in 1994 (the other one introduced that year was Birthday Girl). Other names in the fleet: Dragon Lady, Lady in Red, Mustang Sally, Cosmic Girl, Ruby Tuesday, Tinker Belle, Claudia Nine, Diana, Queen of the Skies, Maiden Toulouse, Varga Girl (2005), Sleeping Beauty (2005), and Sweet Dreamer (2005).....and a bunch more.

Well, "Diana" is another Oldfield-related one. "Sweet Dreamer" is one for Eurythmics.

Thanks, that made me laugh out loud!!!!!!!!!

I know it sounds like a load of rubbish but please believe me it's true

one particular incident that happened recently was...

i work in a music shop and i was trying to remember what cream album the song 'strange brew' was on.  i went to ask one of my collegues and he said that someone had just phoned him up to ask if we had the film 'strange brew' in stock.  Woooooooooooooooooo!

and various other things...

maybe you have had some weird things happen to you in the run up to 2012??

If you really want, you can buy a model of Tubular Belle to make yourself. It should look something like this once finished (either that or a big ball of mangled plastic and glue, depending on your skill).

Mike was indeed no longer with Virgin Records at the time of the plane's introduction to the fleet, but neither was Richard Branson, him having sold the company to EMI shortly after Mike left. The name is purely a tribute to the album whose success indirectly led to the launch of the airline.

Well I was just with some friends this evening and we ended up burning crisps and playing football while being pissed!  :p It was a nice evening!! But nothing I can't explain! I'm sorry this story was a complete nonsense :/
Your story was great by the way, Mink Stoles

You know, it would be nice if the stories here could at least bear some relation to the original post (i.e. being either about the Virgin plane Tubular Belle, or about Mike-related coincidences). I'm sure we can all think of a few silly stories to tell, but here really isn't the place for them (go and email them to Mike instead, I'll bet he'd like that ;)).

David Mar has just started a new thread saying that he saw this very plane on the news, now that is a coincidense seeing as how it has been around for 11 years and I had never heard of it before.
