Just been sent this, it has nothing to do with Mr O but it might amuse some of you...

How smart is your right foot?

1. Whilst sitting, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number '6' in the air with your right hand.

Your right foot will change direction, and there's nothing you can do about it!!  :)

I just want to know why now!

( I really should go and find something useful to do :) )

My foot keeps going clockwise. Is there something wrong with me...

(Work colleagues have just given me one of those "what the heck is he doing now" looks. They know there is something wrong with me! :)

That's so weird...

I love little brain teasers like that.

It happens with some people (okay, maybe many people), and I guess there IS something you can do about it.

Like acquiring a dual-core brain, maybe...

This (normally) happens because the brain links the hands' motion (whatever it is) with the feet's motion. To me it happens, I have no idea about why it doesn't to others. :)

...and, of course, it all depends how you draw your sixes - if you start at the middle and draw your loop clockwise, round to the point at the top, you can get around it... but that's cheating, of course....  :D

Well I guess you do have the dual-core brain. I think I'd just ignore the work colleagues, shouldn't they be working anyway?

uhm... I have tried my 6's clockwise, and anti clockwise, and still my foot stays its clockwise motion...

Its the same with me when i do that "rub your belly and pat your head".. I can do that too..

and i can also move one hand clockwise and the other anticlockwise, apparently its more difficult, and it would be interesting to see if imafoolandimlaughing and i have this in common..

Try this -

take your right hand, turn it on its side - like a karate chop, then turn it so that your palm is facing you, and the back of your hand (your knuckles etc) are facing away from you. do the same with your left so that both palms are facing you,

now,

try to move your right hand towards you, up, forward, down, towards you, up, forward down, only make  this like a circular motion - we will say that this is moving in an anti clockwise motion for the purpose of this experiment...

now, wile you are doing  this with your right hand... try to move your left hand in completely the opposite way, i.e - forward, up, towards you, down, forward, up towards you, down. try to make this circular again, like as if to be going opposite in relation to the right had

so to summarise,

right hand - toward you, up, forward, down, toward you, up, forward, down
Left hand - forward, up, toward you, down, forward up, toward you, down.

heh, sounds more complicated trying to write it down, but apparently its one of the hardest things a mind can do to try to multitask..

Yeah, I managed to do that too. I think the tricky thing is starting both motions at the same time, but once it stabilises, I can do it on and on.

I have little or no knowledge on the matters of coordination, but things like that might have to do with how the movements of one side of the body are controlled by one hemisphere of the brain (someone, please correct me if I'm wrong). Similar difficulties arise for percussionists, keyboardists, etc. when playing polyrhythms - for example, drumming triplets with one hand and quintuplets with the other, at the same time. Trickiness ensues!

You do have a very good point there, I have always been fascinated by percussion and rhythm, and i can do what you what you were saying with triplest adn quintuplets, maybe there is a link to someone who never stops tapping rhythms out and being able to do the above tasks.

What i found funny was, my mum argued with me once that women were better at multitasking, but she cannot do what i above said.

I personally swat off all these sexist comments about women being better at this, men being better at that.... it annoys me, and as i above noted, its not true most of the time.

but yeah, i agree, i think it goes though with a lot of musicians, as even with the guitar you find one hand doing something opposite (like speed picking or economy picking at high speeds.)

I guess I should have wrote ask an African drummer or ask an african masterdrummer.
I think I know quite alot about African culture(s) so I'd never imply anything racist.
What I meant is that most polyrhtyhms come from Africa, they have spread them around the world.
There are incredibly many drummers in Africa anyway. :)

johnnyw, you are very clever, and anyone else who can do these complicated tasks!! I'm dead impressed, wish I could. It's possibly something that Guitar playing, piano playing, percussion hitting people can do with ease, and me as a 'ne'er do well' can't! I'm very glad you can so you can all make great music for us to listen to! :)
