Electric Mike for me. His solo playing on the electric is his extraordinary and totally original while his acoustic playing is simply very good.
Or do you mean acoustic vs electronic? Mike sometimes get lazy and gets the computers to do the work for him, so if you're talking about production then I'd prefer the acoustic Mike.

I don't understand this. If you like the sequence of sounds, who cares whether it was produced directly by Mike's fingers or with a computer in the middle?

In another thread people are currently going 7 No Trumps in orgasms over Hendrix. I wonder if they'd like those same sequences of guitar notes if they were generated by a computer? I doubt it, somehow.

There's the purist attitude to consider.I'd prefer to hear a real guitar being played by a real player than by a computer but that's just me.But then is that the same for keyboardists who'd rather hear a genuine Hammond B3,for example, than a emulation of the same from something like a Korg?I can't tell the difference personally but i can certainly hear the difference between a computer model/sampled guitar and a real guitar a mile off.Probably because the guitar is a more physical instrument to play and things like vibrato and pick/fingerstyle attack are very personal to the player.Mike has a very distinctive style and sound as well as a very unusual vibrato so it's easy to figure out what's 'real' and what's not.
As for acoustic vs electric (if we're talking guitars)then i'm more inclined to say electric. Some of his most moving parts have been on electric. The beautiful bass and guitar duet that closes Star's End part 1 is something i still find achingly moving every tiem i hear it.
That said some of his acoustic parts are the same. The acoustic solos on TB side 1 or the acoustic solo peice preceeding Paddy's peice on Ommadawn are wonderful and full of emotion.
I think though the electric wins overall though.

When I first read this I thought "Electric, of course", but now that I think about it, there are so many wonderful acoustic moments in Mike's work... I cannot decide between the two. They are two inseparable sides of his style.

An electric git played by MO. The PRS was working well.

To me, the magic is when he switches, like in the TB2 concert.

The thing is that the choice between computer and "real" instruments usually affects the sequence of sounds. If you play an electric guitar or a sampled guitar from a keyboard you don't play the same things.

I don't have a problem with synthesizers or samplers at all and I'm not a purist in any way, but I do have a problem with imitations and substitue when "the real thing" is obviously at arm's length. There is nothing I dislike more than the "acoustic guitar" preset on a synth workstation if it's used as if it was an acoustic guitar. It is not. Don't try to fool us...

Exactly  :)

For acoustic you think mmm that little bit in Amarok (about 40 mins in) where its acoustic and bass 20 seconds of pure magic.

Then that tiny choke he does in Ommadawn on the electric during the main melody

And what about......you could go on endlesly :)
