Does anybody know if Mike still got (and makes use of) the private pilot licence he acquired at the end of the seventies ???

I don't know much about it, but he suffers for vertigo ("vertige" in french), so he doesn't fly much.  He once flew with Richard Branson and it went so badly he wrote Five Miles Out (the song, I mean).

AFAIK,nope.
Even his helicopter's licence too!
He's now on Radio Controlled Model Helicopters only.

AFAIK at the seventies he took a pilot license and at early eighties the helicopter pilot license, and he use to fly so I asume that a those times he wasn't afected by vertigo  ;)  but maybe now he is.

The story in which the FMO album and song is inspired in is not related with RB as far as I know. Mike and his band were flying when they entered into a big and violent storm. Finally Mike managed to take the plane out of the storm and nothing really serious happened to them.

From the 60 second interview:

Quote
Are you still piloting?
Not any more. I took a small plane on tour and ended up in the middle of a thunder cloud. There were hail stones the size of apples...

Did it put you off?
Yep [laughs]. I switched to helicopters for a while - that was fun. You stick it down somewhere when you're tired and then get some farmer chasing after you so you hop off again. They go [adopts West Country accent]: 'Get orrrf of my land.' I used to stop for a roll-up and get chased away. I don't do any of that anymore.

Not even the roll-ups?
Oh, I still do those. Just the piloting stopped being fun.

Would you be good to sit next to if a pilot had a heart attack?
In theory, I could handle a commercial jet. I love it when airplanes get into trouble. I'm scared of flying - but only when it's sunny and flat. When we hit a storm and it's bucking all over the place, I'm going: 'Yesss!'

From other interviews:

I was never a very good pilot, I’d always be better known for my bad landings. But I learnt to fly to conquer my fear of flying, which certainly worked because I wasn’t really able to travel when I was twenty years old due to claustrophobia and this kind of stuff.

I have a great love for Flight Simulators. In the late 70s and 80s I played Flight Sims and loved helicopter products but drifted way from it - I dabble in aeroplane modelling and fly model helicopters.
