Hey everybody! I haven't been here in a looong time.
Anyway, I recently found a great used record store here in Pittsburgh (USA) and they had lots of Mike Oldfield! I am very excited, but I can't go crazy and buy all of it.

I just want to know..how good of a find is an Airborn (2LP) vinyl for 6 USD? I hadn't even heard of it before finding it there. I have not bought this one yet and I am trying to conserve a little money, so does anyone have info about the quality and rarity of it?

Well look who it is...

I'd say that's a pretty good find. It was a North American release, so it's not quite as rare over there as it is in Europe, but it's still a fairly uncommon item (my gauge with such things is to ask myself how many other copies I've seen...if the answer is none, then I'll call it rare, even if there are theoretically millions of copies). It depends why you're buying it really, the "Have I seen another like it?" approach isn't always a very good way of picking out valuable items for sale at massive profit on eBay (but then, I never do that), but it is likely to land you some intriguing items which you might not otherwise come across (of course!).

The Airborn 2 LP edition is definitely an intriguing item, mostly thanks to its second LP (the first is just Platinum with Guilty instead of Woodhenge). You get a live version of Tubular Bells which is different to that on Exposed (relatively speaking - it's from the same tour, so not completely different, just a different mix and different performance) and the unique Incantations Live/Studio mix, both of which are worth a listen.

For $6, I'd say that's definitely worth getting.

Koooooooooorggggg
Thanks for the advice :o) I think I'll probably go for Airborn now.

Yes, I'm really just looking to buy for interestingness, as well as tip-top musicality, and I need to pick and choose which ones are more worth it. I do not plan to sell them.
It was between Airborn  for $6 and Orchestral TB (which, I'm ashamed to admit, I've actually never heard) for $4, but I might just get both and forfeit an FM album I was looking at. Any glaring opinions on Orchestral TB, by the way?

Good to hear from you again.

Woah Alnilam! Wondered what had become of you!

I was in a used record shop in Northampton, MA over the weekend that carries lots of vinyl and there wasn't a single Oldfield among them. Disappointing. I've never come across Airborn in any record shop in the last several million years (when the light reaching our eyes left the Andromeda galaxy, ha ha ha) , not even when all record shops carried vinyl and Mike Oldfield (yes...there was a time when even a Sam Goody's carried vinyl Ommadawn! ) .

<glaring mode on> Regarding OTB, I have it, didn't care for it, but haven't played in the last 20 years. My tastes have changed a bit, and you remind me that it's time for another spin (or hurl) ;) You might well find something redeeming about it....for $4, I'd get it. You could always change your plans and re-sell it if you found it to be too much of an abomination. :D </glaring mode off>

CM (Clueless Moment).....When you say FM....do you mean Freddie Mercury, FMO, other?  The vinyl FMO cover is awesome, BTW (which you probably already know!;) .

MC!
I'll probably go for both of them this weekend. I'm excited, to be honest.
And FM is a Canadian proggy band from the 70s.
There's no guitar in the band whatsoever. Rather than a lead guitarist, they have a lead electric mandolinist. They're great.

Hell, maybe I'll get all 3.

P.S. Vinyl FMO, QE2, Hergest Ridge, and Ommadawn are a slightly different experience, being the first non-HDCD versions of them I've heard. I love it.

Indeed! Live dangerously!  :D

FM--yet one more I've managed to completely miss--think so, anyway. Will have to be on the lookout for them.

At any rate, happy shopping!

Anilam: I'd get that "Airborn" ASAP. It is worth it for the version of live TB, especially the dirge section in the middle. The voice doing the instrument announcements is kind of silly, though.

Though it is similar to the "Exposed" version, the live TB on "Airborn" does sound different enough.

I love Orchestral Tubular Bells as well, but unlike "Airborn" you can get this on CD.

I probaby paid $6 or $7 for my "Airborn", but that was when it first came out new.

OTB is worth having if for no other reason than to hear Mike play an accoustic/electric variation of the Ambient Guitars section.  I rarely listen to the rest of the album.

I'm rather pleased with myself this afternoon for finding a copy of Airborn in my local Oxfam for £3.99! Not had a chance to listen to it yet, as I haven't got access to a turntable until I visit my g/f - look what she's got to look forward to!

:)

That's a real bargain!

I got my copy of Airborne for 1495 pesetas... Around 9 euros... And, although both LPs are fine, the cover has a very noticeable circular wear out and several scratches... Not fine condition, I'd say...

Wow that's a bargain, especially given its rarity, :D .  I managed to get Boxed on LP last year for £10,from a secondhand record dealer,  did haggle, was asking £15, but I was a bit broke at  the time :O .  Still I don't know what my chances of finding Boxed again, would be at that price, still had to sieze the opportunity while it was there      :) .  The only thing is I'm too without a turntable ATM.

If you feel a little glum to Hergest Ridge you should come.

Ahh..the memoties of youth. I was on a schooltrip to some incredibly boring London museum (science if I remember correctly) and we were allowed a brief visit to Oxford Street. The joys of finding more than one Oldfield album on the rack - and an import section!

Sitting on the bus back home with my Airborne copy and then discovering it was Platinum but with a much better version of Exposed on the second disc.

Now i remember it, I'd better head over to the album cover poll...

I personally like Airborn. I bought it myself about a billion years ago at a local 5 & 10 store (Payless to be exact) back when all your local stores seemed to have a record section. My version is the single LP though. But I think for 6 bucks you can't go too wrong.

I have Orchestrial TB on CD, not exactly my favorite, but a nice change of pace.

I also have FM on vinyl, also from about a million years ago, and still occassionally listen to it. (I love Steely Dan as well).

For the prices you've listed I'd get them all!
