It has been a sad day today as the world of music and radio learn of the death of Alan Freeman. He really was the champion of "dinosaur" rock in the mid seventies. When John Peel was disuaded from playing the soon to be released Ommadawn on his late night show, Alan took up the gauntlet and played the whole album on his Saturday show in defiance of the powers that be. Later he again played the whole of side one saying it was a "rather incredible album".
He managed to get an interview with Mike in late 1976 which I only caught a short snippet of, but it was full of enthusiasm for his subject. I would have loved to hear that whole interview which was part of an Insight series but I only ever got the preview snippet. Did it ever get broadcast? I scanned the Radio Times for weeks afterwards and it never appeared. However, Alan Freeman truly appreciated what Mike was doing at the time, as did John Peel, and both deserve to be recognised for championing Mike's music when the press had largely turned against him.
RIP Alan
