This idea was brought up in the TB3 forum, but i think it would be interesting here as well.

If you were to rename any of the albums, what would you call them? Would you rename any of them or leave the titles as is?

OK, OK, all right. Before anyone asks, here's "why"... smile

As I said, the whole thing was a joke, which was in turn stimulated by a moment's inspiration after reading Tubulabills' message. So I simply gave a quick look at my Oldfield collection and came up with the titles. In particular:

The TB trilogy immediately reminded me of the classic Star Wars trilogy, because I always saw the music in those albums as a kind of musical battle between good and evil forces, always ending with the 'good guys' winning. So: TB1 is dramatic, from its very beginning, and ends very cheerfully. TB2, IMHO, is slightly more dramatic and ends a little bit less happily than TB1; finally, TB3 is the most mood-varied album of the trilogy, and it ends in what I consider a very triumph-like climax [despite the child's voice...see my posts in the "Sound of too boo lar bells" topic, TBIII forum wink] Whoever knows the Star Wars movies will realize that their cinematic content is more or less the same as the musical content of the three TBs. wink

All the other titles, except of course Amarok, were born out of mental associations between the real titles and the cover images.

Dolphin ---> The choir on Pl. 4 actually says "We are home". Listen to it more carefully...also the solo voice version of it on The Complete...and you'll realize that there are words, and they are "We are home". A friend of mine, who knows very well Philip Glass' North Star (the piece which this was taken from) also says it's "We are home".
"We are home" also sounds to me as a very good alternative title for Platinum Part 4.

Oh, and another one for EM (based on the cover): Floating Songs. smile

If i was to rename any of them, i'd do the following:

  • Voyager: Ireland's Calling
  • The Songs of Distant Earth: Songs of THE Distant Earth (it just sounds better that way!!!!!!)

What would be kind of cool, if he made an album like Guitars, only in Piano.

On behalf of the CDDB system, I'd like to offer...

Amarok: Sounds of a crackling fireplace
(and no, I don't know what it means either...)

And while we're taking inspiration from the covers...

Incantations: "Oh I do like to be beside the seaside..."

Heaven's Open: "Are you sure you cooked that egg properly?"

Ok so they wouldn't sit too well as album names but there you have it (if we're onto making concise titles, we could shorten Earth Moving to 'Earthquake!!' although it might lose some subtlety in the process...).

Bad pun time:

The Complete Mike Oldfield: Swallow-ed Up (groan, as opposed to the infamous Swollowed Up By A Big Fat Snake that I have heard much about at another Mike Oldfield site and that I am not advertising)

This idea just popped into my head while i was browsing the boards. I remember before TMB was released there was some debate on what the album should be called. The only two options were "The Millennium Bell" and "Saqsaywaman" (i remember this because someone made the comment that if you said it fast a couple times it sounds like 'sex-ay woman').

Now that the album has been out for quite some time, i have a question to ask: for those who wanted the album to be called "TMB" do you think it should have called Saqsaywaman instead of TMB? There seems to be quite a dispute on calling this album a "bell" album.

Well, if you look at it like that, two of the most popular albums (you know which ones) are words from a LOTE, so calling an album Saqsaywaman wouldn't be anything new...except for a change in language.

But personally, I don't think it would be any better. Maybe it's just the eternal pessimist in me, but any album that can be interpreted as being called "Sexy Woman" would not be as great as it could be in my mind because of the title (this coming from someone who thinks the title is the most important aspect in writing Lit. essays (as long as it has a bad pun/other play on words in it)). I'm not a huge fan of Pacha Mama anyway, which is probably affecting my judgement, but I don't think that Saqsaywaman is a good alternative. It's not a Bell album, but it's been called that and we're stuck with that title. Unless something really really really drastic happens. And it probably won't. A good alternative title? I don't know, and it's too late anyway.

O.K., so I'd like to complete my list of alternate names for the new albums:

Tres Lunas --- Dos Lunas (that's the real name of the bar in Ibiza)
Tubular Bells 2003 --- Return to the Beginning

By the way. I'm sorry cos my premonitions about Hergest Ridge 2 and other albums didn't come true - so far. It's just he's accumulating all the works to release them all together in one year's time... wait and see!!!

By the way, I saw in a dream the title of the new cover: it is called Atlantis.

Have a good time.

Where has this thread been all this time?

Ok, my turn to have some snide fun:

Tubular Bells II: "Synthesized Bells"
Tubular Bells III: "Sampled Bells"
Tr3s Lunas: "Synthesizers" (the perfect follow-up to Guitars)
Five Miles Out: "Cruising On Autopilot"
The Songs Of Distant Earth: "I knew movies were always worse than the books, but this is ridiculous."
Heaven's Open: "And you can all go to Hell."
Crises: "Crises? What Crises?" (get the reference! )
Boxed: "Quadrophenia"

Half of these suck, but hey, I'm bored.
