Looking back, Mike had really lost direction (or been forced in another direction by Virgin) in the 1980s, with those all-vocal albums sounding less and less like Mike Oldfield.
Then we suddenly get Amarok... a masterpiece of weirdness and an unusual but interesting collage of sounds and styles. For Amarok Mike really seemed to go back to basics making one long track and playing just about any object he could get his hands on. After Heaven's Open, I think he really needed to break away - and Amarok couldn't be more different to what went before.
And from there, we get TBII, TSODE, Voyager, et al.
I think regardless of whether you like Amarok or not (and I really like it), that album really put Mike back on track.
Do you agree?
