I have just got the CD of Children Of The Sun and it has bonus tracks of Mike improvising.Well,I was gobsmacked when I heard his playing at only 15 I assume. The playing is so complex and fast and seems far more advanced than what I have heard him play since then (except Taurus 111).

The intersting thing is I can hear 2 distinctive melodys from Amarok and one from Ommadawn.Totally fascinating and also some very spontanious vocal performances from Mike.

This CD is worth getting just for the 3 instrumental bonus tracks alone!.I thought I was pretty good on guitar at 35 but listening to this makes me feel I have got a lot of practasing to do.He did lock himself in his bedroom for years to get like that though   ;)

Can anyone tell me what age Mike was when he recorded the improvised tracks?

15 years old (Sally was 20). The tracks were improvised during the Sallyangie sessions. Mike was brought in at Sally's suggestion:

Of course I agree with you on everything, Ian. :)

Mike said that, when planning Amarok, he went back to the same ideas he was playing around with when he recorded Ommadawn. I'd imagine that some of the ideas he was talking of would have to be those which appear in those improvisations - I'd imagine that they're little melodies which he spent a lot of time playing around with until he found a place for them.

Strangely, it was only the other day I was saying how some of Mike's best playing is the stuff which doesn't make it onto his albums. He can still play like he did back then (though he himself says that he's not as good), just it obviously doesn't fit with what he wants to do on his albums.
