my brother told me about this, and although I haven't seen it yet, I plan to very soon... I am sure it will interest some of you here...

it is completely beautiful and the ideas behind it are facinating and effect everyone of us. I like the fact it is not an obvious representation of how we should measure time, I love the fact that it looks so strange and yet has so much meaning. I really like it's little erratic nature ..just how time can seem to us on occasions.

there is also information about it on Wikipedia if you are interested.

any more strange and wonderful things from around the world that you want to share?  :)

The grasshopper reminds me of the big mean bug from "Men In Black"!

I have to echo one of the youtube commenter's sentiment...

ok so i dont understand... is there something revolutionary about this clock, or is it just a neat clock?

I don't really get this relativity thing; I mean by all means I do understand about the relativity of time, as it's something I used to give a lot of thought to at a certain point in my life... but I don't really get what this clock has to do with it. Does it actually run slower or faster at times... and if so, when and why? And if not, what does it do that a normal clock doesn't, apart from looking neat?

At times the clock does run faster and at times slower. Why? To remind people of the relativity of time. The insect, Chronophage (=eater of time), is also supposed to remind people about the inevitable passing of time.

It shows correct time only every five minutes.

But surely it's more like a work of art, rather than just a clock.

When people for example work too much or constantly worry about petty things, they might forget to actually live, to do the things they really want to do and to enjoy life. I feel that this kind of reminder is what we need sometimes and thus find the idea of the clock refreshing and even essential.

perfectly put Harmono, that is exactly what I meant. The whole point being it makes you 'think' about time itself not just glance at how it is measured as in a conventional clock. How precious is time to you, how much is left, can you ever get it back somehow once it has gone? Any worthwhile art form ( especially music, but including sculpture, literature, film, poetry , dance etc ) has this question raising quality about all manner of things/subjects...and it's that that enhances and increases the value of our lives. I think. :)

If we feel the need to enjoy life, that's probably because we feel like we won't enjoy death. On the other hand, if we feel we will enjoy death better than life, why not suicide right away?

I'm selfish enough to enjoy life most of the time I guess.

Selfish is good -  I chose life.

Choosing is one thing. Looking at beautiful things and enjoying life, knowing all the humans who suffer in the world, can be seen as very selfish. But we probably have no choice (thinking of this Woody Allen quote that God is an underachiever), enjoying life and trying to make others' better so they may enjoy it too someday.

I had never thought of the life/death thing in relation to time curiously enough. I must be so caught up in the 'now'.

I think we have to make the most of it, 'life' , because none of us knows what is next or if there even is a next. I don't think I am scared of death as such, more so of loss, of the sense of changing, of the sense that knowing something can never be again, of knowing when change is actually happening. Understanding and accepting that there is not a great deal we can do in many cases to alter circumstances helps us come to terms with difficult moments.

I do believe too that looking for and finding ( quite easily infact) something good in every day, and thinking positively really helps. It's very hard to do sometimes, but once you get into the habit it feels so natural!

And thinking on, though I am not particularly religious, I do not feel that death means it is all over, something carries on, somehow, there is more, I feel sure of it. But what form that takes...I have no idea, but it s ok, not scary at all

:)
