Excellent interview.
Although I do like TB, it's nice to hear about other albums and some of the background. e.g. I didn't know Dave Gilmour helped out on Heavens Open!.

Great stuff - very good interview, Anil even gets away with 2 "why" questions!!! I find it remarkable that he describes his new songs as "miserable"...hmmm...
I should have known you being in Copenhagen dear Mike - just once... :/

What a great read.  Although I'm surprised when Mike says the fast acoustic guitar riffs on Amarok have no time signature.  I've always counted it in my head as the following:

2 bars of 10/8
1 bar of 9/8
1 bar of 16/8

then repeat!

Good interview, Mike can be very amiable & informative when he wants to be.
Could easily have done the chat show circuit speaking like that, self depricating, humorous & throwing in a bit of name dropping, which always goes down well.

It's quite nice to read about Mike's entusiastic approach to the Amarok, when he talks about this album beeing his best work. It's always exciting for me to read anything Mike's talking about the Amarok, especially from the technical point of view, because there was always lack of informations about it. He also has much interest in making 5.1 of the album from some time, so i'am very curious if this interest will reflect somehow, especially on guitar sounds on the newest record. And finally maybe his next work will be another hand-made instrumental work. :)

Two things Mike stated in the interview that got me excited about the new album :-

1.) All but one of the tracks are miserable but POWERFUL !!!!

2.) rather aptly he's reproducing the end of Ommadawn part one guitar sound !!! .. maybe even better ... if that's possible with his new Avid effects box!

I think I'll play the boxed version of Ommadawn now ..... the screaming guitar solo at the end is even more screaming than on the standard version even though the latter is a better mix !  :)

What a really great interview, that is the best interview with Mike in many years, the person was clearly a fan asking some really good questions, and finaly the Oldfield/Gilmour jam rumour is put to bed :) That must have sounded amazing, but I didn't realise Gilmour helped out on Heaven's Open.

And Mike jammed with Jeff Lynne and Stewart Copeland  :O

It does sound like Mike is excited about Amarok in 5.1 though, maybe this time it will get the promotion and credit it deserves.

I have sampled loops of random movie dialogue and street noise and found that if you really want to, there are time signatures to find there too!  :D

This was an awesome interview. The best I've read in a long time. Thanks a lot for posting!

Probably the best interview of Mike I've ever read!!  

I'm incredibly pleased there was not one mention of Tubular Bells.  Over the years I want to hit interviewers for automatically jumping on that one album and forgetting all the others.  Why did you write it and so forth... as if he hasn't told us a billion times.  

I keep looking for samples of the forthcoming re-issues everyday.  This month can't go by fast enough :)  September brings so many great releases... Mike, Elton, Doctor Who dvd's, Murray Gold, and so on.  

The only real disappointment is that there is nothing extra from Amarok to be released.  Maybe he will then remix sections for our listening pleasure, like he did with Incantations.

I defer to your proper musicianship!  However, when I'm counting it in your head, and even calpping along I can easily separate the rhythm of the intricate guitar riffs into

ONE, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10

Mike also said that PRS guitars contacted him after seeing him at the Olympics, I wonder if they wanted to make an Oldfield signature guitar? Mike didn't say why they contacted him.

I think you're making a mistake in finding beat 1 of each measure. You said you count the riff in 10/8. That is actually very close to 19/16. Alternately, you could write 10/8 as 20/16. But the riff is actually a 16th note shorter than that. So if you're counting the riff in 10/8, I will guarantee that you're cutting the 10th beat of the measure short to land on beat 1 of the next bar.
