A (slightly off-topic?) question to all those guitar-players around here...
My boys have been learning acoustic guitar for some years  and now would like to go electric, so I'm looking for a reasonable multi-effect floorboard to give them something to play with.
Looking in the +-150 EUR/U$ price range for boxes with pedal for real-time control and knobs for parameter twiddling, I've boiled down the choice down to (with the alternatives mostly lacking the twiddling knobs):
- Korg Toneworks AX100G (probably AX1?)
- Digitech RP200 (RP100 + pedal?)
- Zoom GFX-707 (probably Zoom 606?)
Any pro's and con's for these devices? Anyone made any Oldfield-ish sound patches for any of these (to return to the topic ;-).

Bit out of budget if you buy new, but I'd recommend the Boss GT-3. But it's the only one I've used so I'm biased.

I think in general, they're all of similar quality (though I haven't tried any of those particular units), just sometimes one will be better suited to particular styles than others.
Feature-wise, expression pedals and knobs for quick editing can both be very useful features, and are certainly worth having, if they don't cost too much extra.

You might like to have a look at some of the online reviews at the following sites, if you haven't looked already...

http://www.harmony-central.com/Effects/Data/ (this one has a lot...)

Perhaps you could find a shop which would let your boys try them out so they can see which one they like the most.

i've been playing a Zoom GFX-707 for about a year or more now, usually just with earphones plugged straight into it - i think its great for a beginner to experiment with - it has a wide range of sounds and functions.  I usually alter the ready made sounds so they sound completely different and weird - i also run things like tape recorders and keyboards through it - fun!

I think they are good value - i bought mine second hand and with discount when i was working in a music shop, so i'm not entirely sure how much they are new.  about £100?  i'm gonna need to replace mine soon because its really worn out - there is a newer version of the same model on the market at the moment, so i may invest in one of those, or get something different... or make my own...

The old BOSS ME-30 is a great unit considering it's price, with some very decent effects, it's also got a cool little pedal, and is a snap to use.
You should be able to pick one up on the second hand market quite cheaply.
