I don't know if this is much help, but I can tell you I've been searching high and low for music that is somehow similiar to what Mike did early on, and I have found absolutely nada. The Oldfield amalgam of musical styles is very unique and even though TB sold millions, Mike doesn't even seem to have had any imitators.
But I think that if you enjoy Mike's early albums you might like folk acts like Robbie Basho, Pentangle or Fairport Convention. But most of these artists will disappoint if you expect Mike Oldfield-like music. The folk music that Mike drew inspiration from were generally too knees-up and jolly for my taste at least. Something like Ommadawn was a step down an untrodden path that hasn't been re-visited again by anyone as far as I know. Ommadawn was dark, mystical, instrumental progressive folk. I have *never* heard of anyone doing anything like that ever again.
Consequently, I would also be intersted in recommendations of Mike-like artists (i.e. not Jarre or Vangelis).

After all these years, there is one artist that I can say comes closer to Mike Oldfield's early albums than anyone else. It is Mike's own musical colleague David Bedford.

However, I would not say that his work is VERY close to Mike's. It is just closer than anyone else.

Go to www.pandora.com and type in mike oldfield or any album or any song with him and it will create a bank of music for you that is similar in style, etc.  If it sucks you can skip it but you can't go back.

Hope you enjoy it, it sometimes comes up with some pretty obscure stuff!

I always consider early to mid 70’s YES albums to similar to Mikes work.

Just out of curiosity Hiawatha which of Bedford’s work are you referring to?
I only own Star's End, The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, Instructions For Angels and Variations On A Rhythm Of Mike Oldfield (Big mistake that).  None of them to me sound Oldfield like.

It's been years since I've heard any of them. I had "Instructions for Angels" in mind. As I said, not very close to Mike Oldfield, but closer than anyone I can think of.

But Mike plays on these.  You can't get any more Mike than Mike
