Found a blast from the past earlier. The sax solo from Dire Straights "Romeo and Juliet" live on Mandela Day many years ago. Sax solo is about 5:45 minutes in on this youtube link. Video is choppy unfortunately but I can still remember how fantastic that solo was.

Anyone got their own favorite sax solos (no snarky comments about Tres Lunas allowed! ).

p.s. at the end of the solo I think the look on Mark Knopflers face is classic, as though you can see him thinking "you B*****D, you've just completely upstaged me..."

Elton Dean's sax solo on Soft Machine's "All White" (from "Fifth")!

I think the sax is overrated as a melodic instrument (especially the soprano sax), but it's good for more adventurous and atonal soloing. It's also good for playing riffs, like in the middle section of Gong's "You Can't Kill Me" (from "Camembert Electrique") where the sax plays the riff together with the bassist and vocalist while the guitar (played by David Aellen!) goes into wild soloing.

I've got several, these are some.

- "Careless whisper"
- "Baker Street"
- "Old and wise" (The APP)
- "Year of the Cat" (Al Stewart, and AP again)
- "Lily was here" (Instrumental piece by Dave Stewart & Candy Dulfer, 1995)
- "Turtle Island" from Tr3s Lunas. :D

@ Sir M.: sorry, I don't like the Lurie piece. I think it's horrible. :D

That was very good! Does his music generally sound like that?
