Hello and happy holidays to everyone at tubular net! I'm new to the forum but I've been an Oldfield fan since the late nineties. I have all of Mikes music on the latest cd remasters but I've always been a big fan of vinal. My girlfriend got me a turntable for Christmas and instead of buying mikes entire cataloge on vinal i'd just look for the the best sounding audiophile recordings of the albums that mean the most to me which would be Tubular bells through Exposed. I was just wondering if the difference in the sound quality of the audiophile albums(half speed mastered - quad - 180 gram vinal, ect...) as opposed to the original versions were worth the extra money? THANKS!

Sorry, I guess this topic was already discussed at length in the general discussion Mike and vinal.

It might have been touched on...

I suppose I avoided saying anything here because it means me making a terrible admission, and that's that although I own an 'audiophile' copy of Ommadawn (the recent Simply Vinyl edition), I haven't yet got around to playing it. I've heard it's good, though! Certainly the heavy vinyl inspires confidence, and I imagine it will last a bit longer than one pressed on cheap vinyl. It feels like something a bit special, and I actually find that important, because I think I play LPs more for that kind of feeling than I do for the sound (though I do quite like the sound when all of the conditions are right).

Hi Korgscrew, When you get around to listening to the simlply vinyl lp of Ommadawn let me know what you think. I've seen it on ebay and I've been really curious about the sound quality as oppossed to other pressings. Also I was wondering about the CBS half speed mastered copy of tubular bells, it sounds very impressive but my knowledge of audiophile lps leaves much to be desired. I used to own quite a few albums years ago but I didn't have the same appreciation for them as I do now that I'm older. I have to admit cds are sounding better and better all the time and I'd never think of getting rid of my cds but I can't help feel that something was lost in the pursuit of conveniance and perfection in the form of a small silver disc.
