Ah yes...the Paris, Texas soundtrack is really superb. It's fantastic what it adds to the film, which I think is generally brilliant.
I have to mention a favourite of mine though, and I don't think a discussion on slide guitar can go for long without his name coming up (in fact, we're only on the second post here, and already it's coming up :D): Bob Brozman. If Bob is ever playing live in your area, he's well worth going to see, even for people who don't think they like acoustic slide guitar music, because he puts on a show which is hysterically funny (in the show I saw him do on his most recent tour, he announced that he'd tuned his guitar to a 'celtic' tuning, saying it gives him the sound of "the heather on the heath", leaving a dramatic pause before adding "...the bangers on the mash"). He is of course also a master musician, and someone who does some fascinating collaborations. A favourite album of mine is 'Jin Jin' which he did with Takashi Hirayasu, re-interpreting Okinawan children's songs. It's not blues, but Bob's slide guitar playing features heavily, and there are moments of both beauty and humour, together with the almost Amarok-like wild energy of the title track (though Takashi's singing on it makes it very un-amarok-like!).
I like playing slide guitar myself from time to time, and can make it sound ok, but people like Bob are really in a totally different league. I find it very inspirational to hear playing like that.
