Ah yes...the Paris, Texas soundtrack is really superb. It's fantastic what it adds to the film, which I think is generally brilliant.

I have to mention a favourite of mine though, and I don't think a discussion on slide guitar can go for long without his name coming up (in fact, we're only on the second post here, and already it's coming up :D): Bob Brozman. If Bob is ever playing live in your area, he's well worth going to see, even for people who don't think they like acoustic slide guitar music, because he puts on a show which is hysterically funny (in the show I saw him do on his most recent tour, he announced that he'd tuned his guitar to a 'celtic' tuning, saying it gives him the sound of "the heather on the heath", leaving a dramatic pause before adding "...the bangers on the mash"). He is of course also a master musician, and someone who does some fascinating collaborations. A favourite album of mine is 'Jin Jin' which he did with Takashi Hirayasu, re-interpreting Okinawan children's songs. It's not blues, but Bob's slide guitar playing features heavily, and there are moments of both beauty and humour, together with the almost Amarok-like wild energy of the title track (though Takashi's singing on it makes it very un-amarok-like!).

I like playing slide guitar myself from time to time, and can make it sound ok, but people like Bob are really in a totally different league. I find it very inspirational to hear playing like that.

No more takers for this topic it seems

Korgscrew, thanks for mention of Bob Brozman & Takashi Hirayasu. Both great artists IMO - first heard "Chilli Blues" from B.B & then onto more, including a couple of tracks(jin jin). Also like to hear B.B with David Grisman(amazing mandolin).

I should have simply mentioned "Slide Guitar" really though,as don't only just like Blues.Good to learn that you play slide guitar(like the modesty, bet it sounds good all the same).Went onto B.B website to see that he'll be touring next year - would love to see him play live at one of the concerts so, keeping my eye on details. It was very interesting to also read on the website, tips for how to make your own slide from Mateus wine bottles, with photos & all! Great stuff :D

Yes there is, 'Lil Old Me   .

The slide guitarist that springs immediately to my mind is Ry Cooder.  Check out his slide playing on "Memo From Turner" Mick Jagger on vocals, from the film "Performance", a film that starred James Fox as a London gangster, who commits one murder too many and hides out in the home of this rock star (Mick Jagger). From then on it goes all trippy, smoking joints and eating magic mushrooms, (not that I'm advocating anyone taking drugs).

Other people who I consider to be good slide guitar players are Dave Gilmour and also Brian Jones.  Brian I think is a talented multi instrumentalist, who mainly plays guitar, like Mike. I just feel it's a shame Brian would be too stoned to play to his abilities.

Korgscrew I'm not familiar with Bob Brozman or Takashi Hirayasu, any links to their websites please :).

Look no further than bobbrozman.com. Takashi doesn't seem to have a site of his own, but you can read about him by selecting his name in the 'choose a collaborator' menu at the top of Bob's site.

Sidetracking a little, I've always been impressed by the playing of Paul Franklin, who has often joined Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits playing pedal steel guitar, the lap steel's more scary brother (Eric Clapton once likened playing one to flying a helicopter). B J Cole is another well respected player of that particular instrument.

I think that slide guitar can have a very vocal sound, which makes it very engaging. A distorted electric guitar played with a slide can really sing.

Slide guitar is beautiful, but Blues: NOOOOOOOOOO!!!
(the same old stupid chords go on endlessly and it has no emotional value because it's too standard and boring)

But I can imagine someone disagreeing
:)

Don't forget Dwane Allman, he plays a mean slide guitar. Is the dobro used in bluegrass played like a slide guitar? Blues does use the same chord progression alot, but that makes it convienient for jam sessions.

Thanks for the links Korgscrew, very interesting.

Damn Blast B*****er etc, Bob Brozman played in Luton ( 10 miles from me, venue near railway station too!!!;), I missed it :( .
Hope he plays Luton again.

The only thing is I don't have a concert going companion to go with, all my music loving friends are too far away, last time I ended up with a spare ticket I couldn't give it away to folks round here
 :/ .  What a dull place I live in :O .

ohhhhh i do love a little slide guitar, but i especially love playing the blues, i try to slide, but i never have the time to perfect it, and jamming with it onstage is a bit risky, too much distortion and it sounds disgusting. but i have a freind who is a year or two younger than me, and who loves sliding, he has a telecaster and uses a beutiful glass slide, hes a big fan of BB king so he would randomly whack on a track and slide the hell out of it! beutiful sound!! im glad plenty of people like it, i sure do!
