If I bought a boat (sailing yatcht) and wanted to name her after a Mike Oldfield Track - what would the best track name be for this.

My initial Choice would be Ommadawn

Why - it sounds a bit like female (Oma is German for Grandma)
Dawn - for new and for the view.

~Any one think of any others?

Or...(you've set me off thinking, now...)

Blue Peter?
Discovery?
Voyager?
Slipstream?
Orabidoo?

Or...

Five Knots Out?
Tubular Hulls?
I Yacht Rhythm?
Tour Us II?
MaGalleon (from The Ships Of Distant Earth)?
La-meant For Atlantis?
The Sunken Forest?!
Barge-pipe Guitars?

(That's enough puns!;)

Plan on any one-way-trips across the English Channel?

"Ommadawn" is great, especially if you give it a sea horse mascot. :)

Cliche, maybe, but "Tubular Belle" strikes me as a great name for a sailing ship as well as for a flying one.

From QE2, perhaps "Sheba."

Great replies, very amusing some of them! Love this Oldfield sense of humour we all have!

What about Opus 1...Sailor's Hornpipe...Sentinel...or simply Platinum? Remember you have to not feel a berk saying it three times every time you have to use the radio! It's one thing to paint an interesting word on the side of the boat, but quite another to ennunciate the same across a crackly radio!!

Have done the sailing thing, my other half is very keen + the children, Grandad also. I don't share the same enthusiasm but I understand their need to be in a boat. It can be fun, exhilarating, exhausting & frustrating. ( cold, wet & windy too). But I fear the sea & it's power so do take care. ( we have a little Mirror dinghy & called it Polly after a cat we once had. My husband's not a big cat fan but realised that calling a boat by the name of the cat meant I might decide to have a go at sailing!;)

I also think Ommadawn would make a beautiful name for your boat. I even called my ipod Ommadawn!

Enjoy your sailing anyway & let us know what you call the boat!! :)

out of mind ;) :D

Portsmouth has something to it, but is a bit silly if you have no connection with the city of Portsmouth.

Ommadawn sounds great, but you'd have to spell it every time :).  You're from Germany?  Amarok will be easier to spell. It's written as you pronounce it :).

Reminds me that my car license plate is AMAROK and that I had looked at Ommadawn or Orabidoo but they contained too many letters for the state of MO (that is, Missouri, not Mike Oldfield...though it is some type of cosmic coincidence to live in MO). ;)

So...supplemental suggestions are Amarok or Orabidoo.

My fave suggestions from the previous posts are Ommadawn and Orabidoo. Both just sound right as names, but also have passages within the music that fits the sailing mood.

Forced to come up with my own suggestion for you, and not reverting to bad punnery, i would pick sunjammer. But I think tht's ben done before.
Anyway, it's all moot. Boats names, like babies names can be discussed and decided for months, but it isn't until you see them that the right name decides itself.

not too original, but it got a nice feel to it ;)
