Just a quick question- are there any decent, in depth books about Mike and his music?

The only one I have is the awful 'The Man and His Music' by Sean Moraghan, which is completely biased towards the earlier albums and doesn't even pretend to be subjective. 1 page for Heaven's Open??

And that was one he liked! No book masquerading as fact should contain so much opinion about 'Mike's Decline' and the 'poor standard' of the music!   :(

So is there anything better or shall I start writing my own?

James

I've once read in a spanish article about Mike's intention to write his autobiography...if it is true...that would be great!

Mike Oldfield "Tubular Bells" reaches thirty years old...

I most certainly await Mike's autobiography with eager anticipation...

If Mike decides to collaborate with a music journalist a good choice would be Stephen Davis, who worked with Levon Helm on his memoir "This Wheel's On Fire: Levon Helm & The Story Of The Band"

My favourite is "The Making of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells" by Richard Newman, which is unfortunately out of print. It's worth tracking down a copy though, as it's full of interesting anecdotes and has some interesting behind the scenes pictures.

There's also 'Music from the Darkness' by Peter Evans, which they have been serialising on mikeoldfield.org, though there haven't been any updates for a long while.

For other alternatives...I'm working on it ;)

Thanks for your replies...

I decided to revisit the Moraghan book over the weekend, and it is just as bad as I remembered - not only is it full of spelling and grammar mistakes, it also contains quite a few factual innaccuracies (Mount Teide supposedly features lyrics about 'Ireland's Eye' - Mike and Sally herself supposedly sang the original 'Sally' song...)

But worst of all is the utter slating that the author gives to all Mike's albums after Platinum - he constantly harps on about the 'poor quality' of the music, the 'lack of ideas' and Mike's 'Artistic decline'...

The albums from Islands - TB2 get about 2 pages each if they're lucky - there is none of the interesting information about Amarok that could have been included (the hidden messages, the competition...)

Seriously, Korgscrew, go for it - I doubt anyone could do a worse job!
