If you are a fan of "Amarok", then you will probably appreciate this other masterpiece. Written 37 years ago, it has finally been re-recorded and released in it's entirety.
Though the album is vocal-intensive and has very little electric guitar, their are numerous analogies to MO's epic "Amarok" album:
1) Recurring themes, some very brief, strung seamlessly together
2) the use of household appliances
3) emotional range from sad to happy to child-like to frenzied etc...
4) the wide ranging musical genres
5) there us nothing like it in pop
6) it takes repeated listens to "get it"
7) it transcends "pop" music and is more akin to classical
Highly recommend !

Wasn't 'Smile' the lost Beach Boys album, the one which was never supposed to come out because Brian Wilson himself didn't want it to? :) Forgive my ignorance, but I've been listening to Brian Wilson's and the Beach Boys' music only since a very short time and there's still an awful lot for me to discover about him (and them) ;)

On a side note, I always appreciate re-recordings. If this one is really that good, it's surely worth checking out. ;)

The main reason it didn't come out was that Brian had a mental breakdown before he managed to finish it, and he never went back to finish it until now because of all the bad associations.

But he must feel a tremendous sense of closure now that he's been persuaded to finally finish it (with a little help from his band and friends).

I think it sounds great - and well worth the 37 year wait!

I still haven't listened to it. I have heard a lot about it, though, and it seems to be great. I'm not familiar with the Beach Boys, but I'm still interested.
