I dunno if theres a topic like this already (too lazy to look, sorry :-P) but...

Today i went into Virgin Megastores to mainly have a look to see if they had either Amarok or Tres Lunas because i wanted to see the price. They had Tres Lunas which was on sail for an expensive £17 o_O... which is why i'm even more happier because yesterday i ordered it from Amazon UK for £6 new :-D. I also ordered Amarok for £7 (which i am looking very forward to listening to when i get it). Also found an oldish Moby album for £8, all new.

This is the first time i bought music online and i tell ya... i'm going to be doing it alot more lol. :-P

If only high street shops sold music for that price.. this whole mp3 business would just disappear if they did.

Hmmm. High street record prices wouldn't make that much of a difference on music piracy if any at all.

Usually CDs aren't that much more than Amazon. Less popular classical CDs are sometimes cheaper in the real shops if you can find the offers. £17 for TL on the basis that it has two discs is a bit extortionate! Like when I paid £15 for TMB :(

It would logically seem that those buying music from online stores are probably the ones who download the mp3s more. Apple have the i-tunes system where you can download legal music and only pay for those select tracks. I don't use this so I'm not familiar with it, but it has said to have had a great following so it must be doing something to the threat of music piracy

Congratulations on becoming a fellow Amarokian. Happy?

May I also suggest looking for CDs on ebay? You can get them even cheaper sometimes, postage included!

I tend to buy all of my music online - usually from www.play.com as I find Amazon's postage a bit of a rip-off espcially as play.com's prices include postage and take 2-3 days depending on availability - Mike's stuff is really popular on there... it really is worth a look.

I don't download much music, only the odd song. I really do prefer owning the official CD.. it means more to me for some reason :-P.

I think that high street record prices do have an effect not necessarily on piracy, but on the problems which the industry are putting down to piracy. Album sales increased in the UK when prices of CDs were dropped, at a time when sales were falling everywhere else. Single sales continue to fall - the industry blame piracy, the buyers blame high prices and uninteresting music. I think the buyers have a point...

I also buy from play.com when I can, most CD's there are about 8.99 with no P+P to pay. The only downside is that they don't carry a very wide range of stock so if it's something more obscure you want you ususaly have to resort to Amazon to find it.

I paid £17 for The Streets album last week which is a ridiculous amount of money to pay for a CD. That is why people are downloading music for free. Seems obvious really.
