All of us here would know a new Mike song simply by his unique style and sound.
I think Gilmour is the same maybe its a guitar thing?

But I got to thinking does this apply to other instruments and musicians.
When it comes to drummers Simon Phillips and Phil Collins have a distinct sound as well and to the most part are instantly recognizable .

Can anyone list other artists that have such a unique way of playing that they would also fit into this category .

Obviously vocalists don't count .

Oh I guess the Edge would also make the list.

I like Blancmange and came across this Running Thin track yesterday for the first time, from their Platinum Collection.

So have included it here because of it's chunky poppy poopy 80s synthesiser, which I love. Also reminds me of the Depeche Mode sound.

Great track Wiga also reminds me of very early O.M.D.
Coincidently they have a new album out in the U.K in a few weeks and also fit the criteria for this thread.

Yes, that synth sound is very OMD..

Thanks Milamber for the info. Intersting video - dancing with just their white pants on.  :O

P.S - oh, I think you've switched the video - the dancing men have gone!!

I like it Milamber- their synth sound hasn't changed.

Souvenir is my favourite OMD track.

Its definitely one of my faves as well, probably pipped to the post by Maid of Orleans & The New Stone Age.
You should check out their Live DVD from last year fantastic stuff ,the live version of Messages really rocks the house .

Tom Scholz from Boston. And of course Brad Delp.

There also are a few piano-playing singers who are popping up in my mind right now. The piano is such a common instrument that it's really difficult for anyone to find his or her own style on it, but I can say that I easily recognize the two best-known women pianists, Tori Amos and Kate Bush, just by their piano playing (regardless of the fact that their voices are very similar). Joshua Kadison is another guy who put his own stamp on the piano... if you don't know who he is, look him up on YouTube - I'm too lazy to do that. :D And of course Isaac Slade from The Fray is a great songwriter and a great pianist. Billy Joel and Elton John used to have some distinctiveness as well quite a few years ago, but now they've become standardized.

Oh, thanks a lot Milamber for the info! I didn't know that there will be a new album...

I was lucky to see them live in 2006 at the Nokia Night of the Proms show, the same show that Mike took part. Can you imagine that feeling: Mike and OMD in one night...

Alex Lifeson, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Brent Hinds (I mean, who else plays banjo licks in metal songs!?), and I think Gavin Harrison has a pretty unique style on the drums. Oh, and Bill Bruford. There's many more of course, but that's all I can think of at the moment.
