It seems now that I moved I only have half the DSL bandwidth I had before. Talking to techs on the phone, and the lady who fixed my phone jack today, none of them knows what they are talking about. Now that I'm online again my top download speed is about 70 to 75 kiloBytes(Byte vs. bit) per second. I tested this by going to several download sites, game demos/anti-virus software etc. The downloads never acheived 80kBps. 72kBps was about average. In my previous homes going back 5 years, downloads would achieve 150kBps and maintain it, even peak at 170kBps or more. I got a DSL tech on the phone. Explained that kb(lower case b) is bit, and kB(upper case B) is byte which is 8 bits. Therefore if you have a bandwidth of 800 kbps and divide that by 8 you get 100 kBps. I just got a lot of "uh...." talk. Then the phone tech talked me thru getting internet explorer to do a "speed test". I did it several times and got around 650 kbps. Divide that by 8 and it works out to 70-75 kBps which is all my baby will pull now. Is my math correct? Is this just a maneuver to get me to upgrade at a higher price? Calling all PC freaks/techno wizards.

Yep, that seems about right. For comparison: my DSL link is 1024 kilobit/s, and download speed hovers -- in a good day -- at 110, 120 kilobytes/s, though is usually stays at 100. So your link seems to be appropriate -- but if you were getting twice as much bandwidth before, you must check if the service you're getting is really what you're paying for, or something. Companies will almost always sell kilobits, so be sure to compare those 650 you're getting with what is on your contract.
