Some say, probably just in a desperate attempt to annoy me, that Moonlight Shadow kind of copies Cat Stevens' Moonshadow. I would disagree, it has a similar acoustic rythmn feel though, and the title too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtgXus3eiII And it's just not as good, quite simply, his music is too dry anyway, he should  treat himself with some reverb.

I'm almost certain there has already been a discussion about this. I don't think the two songs are very similar, but I do like Cat Stevens' music.

Thats some Sort of Hanging Offence to try to  Compare the two Songs... Moonlight Shadow is the Perfect Song ..
ive got the Cat Steven Song but it rarely troubles my CD Deck where as  the Maggie Song is always on there on Heavy rotation..

The two songs have nothing to do with each other apart from being both in a folky mood. The basic concept of the lyrics is totally different, and the music is as well. MS doesn't even sound like it's inspired by Cat Steven's song, as the former is a full-blown song, while the latter sounds very like a polished and (IMHO) well played, well-sung version of a children's ditty, or a nursery rhyme.

Cat Stevens...  my God, does that ever take me back.  Simpler times.  Innocence and naivete.  The era of the singer/songwriter.  I like Cat.  So puzzling that he would eventually involve himself in such controversy.  Peace Train, huh?  Can anyone tell me if his latest album is worth getting?

Forgot to mention... in reference to Olivier's remark about reverb.  Remember "Two Fine People" from his first hits album?  That mix is so dry that it sounds like he's right there in your living room, kinda cool.

Oh no, he isn't. Cat Stevens is a nice bloke who sings nice, folk-sounding songs. Yusuf Islam is a terrorist. :D

[Do I really believe in what I'm writing?!?]

I hope you're joking  :) His 'new' cd is very good.I love Cat Stevens. My dad played Tea For The Tillerman loads in the late 70's/early 80's.Can't see where the comparison for Moonshadow and Moonlight Shadow comes from though mate.
They both have an acoustic guitar in them?I give up.Both great songs and i recommend Another Cup by the great (and in no way connected to terrorism-quiet the opposite in fact)Yusef.

Of course I am joking. :) I do have An other cup, and I think it's excellent - pure Cat Stevens, even if he's got another name. My fav songs on that CD are "Heaven / Where true love goes" and "I think I see the light", but they're all very good.

About 20 years ago I bought about 9 or 10 Cat Stevens albums for a pound each at a charity shop.I`d not long broke up with somebody at the time after quite a long intense relationship. And for one reason or another I think I somehow really identified with his music for a while.Especially those first four early 70`s albums he reorded after he`d spent a year in hospital with TB.(an abbreviation for tuberculosis btw as I believe a severe case of Tubular Bells is still pretty much incureable. ) The first one in particular Mona Bone Jakon is really under-rated imho. There`s some fantastic songs on that album.Including the original version of I Think I See The Light which Ugo mentions there as a track from his latest album.

I can remember compiling a cassette of my favourite tracks from those albums..Mona Bone Jakon,Tea For The Tillerman,Teaser And The Firecat and Catch Bull At Four.Great stuff! It was almost all I would listen to for quite a while thinking back now.Miles From Nowhere became like my theme tune or something,I could`nt get enough of it.He kind of lost it musically after that for me though.I actually thought on Catch Bull At Four he was starting to tread water a little bit.And then as hard as I tried I never really got into his slightly proggy type albums such as Foriegner and Buddha And The Chocolate Box.And so as a consequence of that I`ve never ever got round to venturing much further into his back catalogue really. It`s actually a very long time since I`ve listened to those albums now.And this thread has kind of made me want to dig them all out again and have a listen.

In all honsety I think I`ve probably made comparisons with Moonlight Shadow/Moonshadow as well.I don`t think you can help it really because of the titles of course. That said I think that`s pretty much where all the similarities end though.

Just as well he never decided to do an updated version of "I`m Gonna` Get Me A Gun."..In all reality I`m sure Cat/Yusef is very embarrassed by that song now though.A lot of his early songs both from his pop and second folkier period display an awful lot of naiveity at times.Which is then kind of amazingly compounded by the depth of maturity displayed in songs like The First Cut Is The Deepest(teenage pop star Cat) And Father & Son (foky singer songwriter Cat) It was a whole different age back in those days I guess? That said if somebody like The Beatles had put out I`m Gonna` Get Me A Gun,they would`ve been burning those rekkids by the truckload.

The wikipedia link for Cat puts to rest a few of those controversies that sometimes surround him though imo.I`m not a religous man in any way shape or form, but I`ve always had a lot of time for the bloke myself. The same goes for some of the more religously themed tracks from George Harrison`s solo back catalogue as well I suppose. It`s a strange one really as I know of a lot of people who are probablly put off their music because of that one sole reason to a certain extent. And yet the very same people are more than happy to listen to abstracts for drug dependency and the "price of fame" like it`s something they can identify with?I don`t know maybe I`m generalising too much here? But it sometimes seems to me that any artist who starts to display a sense of positivity and self fullfilment in their work is then immediatley written off in some quaters.

That said from a personal point of view I could probably do with hearing a little more darkness and negativity in his work sometimes.Which is probably partly why I liked those earlier albums of his the most, when he was still trying to find himself a little bit.

Oh yeah and the opening Vocal for Matthew & Son is absolutely drenched in reverb. It always makes me laugh a little bit actually,as it gets pretty close to Bonzo Dog`s Canyons Of Your Mind reverb piss take.Maybe that`s why he decided to leave that effect completely in the off position for future recordings?

It's funny that you would mention the Cat entry on Wiki, because no sooner had I made that glib remark I thought that I'd re-acquaint myself on what the man has been doing in the last several years.  And once I'd remembered all the humanitarian work the man has done before and after the fatwa BS I actually felt ashamed.  It all served to remind me, yet again, that media distorts nearly all that it touches.

After suitably chastizing myself I put on "Another Saturday Night" and boogied around the living room-much to my son's dismay.

:D Well this thread has got me listening to some of those old Cat Stevens records as well.I`m also quite curious to hear his latest album given some of the positive comments posted here.Going off the review links from that same wikipedia page it looks to have been very well recieved all round really.

Oh dear Lord, he cannot STAND it when I bop around.  He glances up and just shakes his head in mildly disenfranchised scorn.  The role-reversal is utterly complete.

Think I'll take the plunge and get the Cat box set.

You could write a song about it and call it Father & Son (dance version)... :p

I`ve been having to make do with the whole snap crackle & pop of vinyl at this end.Of course it really makes all those acoustic guitars come to life. But I can also hear every tiny little click and evil dust bunny in there, due to all those sparse arrangements he used to favour. The track Into White from Tea From The Tillerman was practically unlistenable sadly.I think I`ll try and clean em` up a bit and rip them into the computer when I get a chance.

Hey Dirk....
Matthew And Son was in his pop phase so everything was drenced in reverb. But the reference to Canyons by the Bonzo's would be more complete if we could hear Cat Stevens play the (deliberatley)awfull guitar solo and then give a good sturdy belch just like Mr Stanshall. Now that would make me laugh as much as the Bonzo's track does everytime.

Going a bit o/t here Caveman. But do you have the latest brand new album from The Bonzo Dog Band? It`s actually pretty good despite the obvious gaping hole left by Stanshall of course. That old guitar solo gets a little bit of a re-airing as well during one of the songs.Complete with the obligatory wailings of (oh jeff) in the background.  :D

I actually quite like some of the songs from Cat`s original pop star phase.Despite some of their "of the time cheesiness" and oddly motivated lyrics. On a kind of Bonzo/Cat Stevens theme for a moment though. There`s a track from Cat`s second album New Masters called I`m Gonna` Be King.Where he sings the entire song slightly out of key.Not entirely dis-similar to the way Les Dawson used to play the piano in fact.I`ve never actually been 100% sure if it was intentional or not.The lyrics to the song kind of suggest that it was intentional, but it still sounds pretty appaling either way.  :/

Afraid i've only got a couple of best ofs of the Bonzos.I agree that some of Cat's early stuff is a bit fromage.I really get into form Tillerman onwards.Although i will see if i can track that song down.
Les Dawson is my nickname for our keyboardist. He is very very good but when he goes wrong he really does go wrong.
Btw nothing wrong with being OTT ;)
