A short time ago I've read Changeling. I usually read Victorian books, but I really liked it. The book is very exciting and Mike certainly has some good stories to tell. I love the part with Clyde. The parts with Richard Branson are very interesting and sometimes funny. Changeling is good to read and reads pretty fast for me. I loved every minute reading it.

I do have a questions however.
I´ve never been married, but I know some people see the wedding as the best day of their lives. Thus it struck me that Mike doesn´t name Anita in the book at all. He also tells very little about his children. Changeling is the first autobiography I´ve ever read, so I don´t know if that´s normal or not. Maybe his wives didn´t want in the book I don´t know. Could someone clear this up for me?

could be that they had a wish for that yes.. but i cant see why anita should have problem with that either.. she just had a concert in my town now, still playing mike songs :)
i also guess that he wanted to protect the children..
anyway.. i guess his book is more about how ill he felt about fear and growing up with famous and his mother..
I love Mike for doing such thing, (brave thing) to tell how he felt like an alien with others, that he did not want to be with them and they did not care for him.. that he was ok.. because he was different.
everything around this subject i could see my self, because im in the same trap.. feel so alien..
many do suffer of this and its "great" to feel that you are not alone.. you against the world thing feeling inside..
he also points out how to get out of this and that is great too..

This book is on my christmas list.....fingers crossed eh

Maybe MO thinks family stuff is sacrosanct (sp)?

Thats a reason I was surprised that the MO family video was found recently.....see Video thread.

Does Mike mention Sally Cooper? I think the only gf he married was Fanny....oh I seem to remember him marrying some girl he met in a commune too when he was about 20....it didnt last and their wasnt any children involved.

I think it's unusual in an autobiography to not mention relationships. He only covered his relationship with his mother, and a little bit with his dad.

As Tubularman says though, talking in detail about coping with anxiety was very brave. That was quite personal stuff. He seemed to have no qualms being candid about that side of his life. His honesty makes his book good self-help material as well - and I admire him for that.

Can't get enough of reading certain bits of it,still today. That book has helped me a lot regarding some subjects I do share similar experiences like the ones that Mike had.

I can't believe there's only 6 posts regarding this book (unless there's another thread, but I can't find it).

Just finished it and it's a great read, couldn't put it down!

I've been meaning to get this book (and many others, incidentally) for some time now. I'm sure I read somewhere that at one stage Mr O even had a fear of flying, but then later, of course, he was able to fly planes himself! That would seem a dramatic change worthy of "medicinal compound" from the old "Lily the Pink" song! Is this correct (about flying, I mean)? I'm not entirely comfortable with planes myself, although I force myself to go on them. :(

Hmm...the search feature seems a bit uncooperative atm, for me anyway. One of the older threads is located at http://tubular.net/forums....;t=7408 . At the time of the book's release, Korgscrew and I held a book discussion for Changeling in Second Life; it was fun to talk about it in real time. Mike wouldn't have discussed his wedding day Re: Anita since there wouldn't have been one, and I can see him not really wanting to discuss much about his relationships and his children. Having been married, I'd not be one to describe my wedding day as the best day of my life even if I were still happily married--too much stress. There have been so many other fantastically wonderful, awesome days (like hiking on Hergest Ridge with good friends! ) . But, maybe the next wedding will trump all the other days of my life. :)

I liked the focus on his childhood, and there were a couple of sections that I really related to. My parents were older, and in my teens it seemed like everything went wrong with my mother's health. She'd have one diagnosis followed by an operation and a hospital stay. Things would go well for awhile, but then the pain would return. It was scary when that happened and it took nearly 8 years and the head of Harvard's neurosurgery dept. to make a proper diagnosis (tumor albeit benign in her spinal column) . That was in the days before MRIs and Dr. House. :)  More lightly, there was his comment about reading glasses, which made me laugh--forget needing a pair in every room--I need a pair in every compartment of my pocketbook! I recall making those comments in an undiscovered thread. :O

The part about Clyde the lion is worth the price alone. Really funny stuff.

Hopefully he'll add to it at some stage and write about everything post-1980.

Yes, he did have a fear of flying for a period of time but it changed after the "seminar." I hear you about forcing yourself to go on planes. Ditto, here. If there is any other convenient way to get someplace, I will opt for that method no matter what statistics show.

One other piece that I'd forgotten until hauling the book off the shelf moments ago--he also discusses the black dog of Hergest Ridge and the legend--and how he moved to the Beacon the year that the 500 years were up (the troublesome ghost of Vaughn was buried in a snuff box on Hergest Ridge for 500 years and his black dog roamed the ridge looking for him).  Apparently Mike was on the lookout for the black dog when he visited Hergest Ridge (heh--aren't we all?) :)  I definitely have to re-read this book!
