Has anyone met or know someone who knows Mike, worked with etc etc.
I will start with Max Bacon. He is a local lad who lives in Northwich and believe it or not,was a milkman in between sessions for artists.
I met Max in a local pub in 1990 as he was doing a one man show of covers.I got chatting with him about working with Mike and he told me what it was like, though he didn't do any of his songs at his gig.
Mike spotted him while he was in the band GTR (Hackett,Howe,Phil Spalding and Max) and asked him to work with him.I know he did his first recording on Islands but Max told me that he met him in 1985.
He said he was a perfectionist to work for, sometimes until the early hours until he sang it just as Mike wanted.Max pointed out that Mike paid him well but only for what was used on the album and not the actual time he spent at his house recording.
In 1989 I remember Nicky Campbel, then of Radio 1,doing a session on MIke which featured Max's version of Far Country. He told me he didn't know this song and had to learn it while driving down the motorway to Abbey Road from his car stereo ha ha.
If any of you have the 1987 recording of Ilslands at the London Paladium ,hosted by Jimmy Tarbuck, you will see Max as one of the backing singers.
He recently moved to a pub(the Farmers Arms) in Northwich,Cheshire where he had a spot of bother hosting rock gigs in a tent outside the pub in the grounds because he couldnt get a licence. It was in the local papers and caused Max a lot of stress. He is an avid Man United supporter (never mind)and goes to all the matches on the coach with my mate.He likes to sing rather loudly on the coach and in the ground.
