I think I already know the answer to this one but here goes just in case.

Sky Arts are currently screening some of the wonderful 'Classic Albums' documentaries, telling the stories behind the making of such albums as  'Dark Side of the Moon, Nirvana's 'Nevermind' and Who's Next'.

It occurred to me that 'Tubular Bells' should be in there too, but somehow I don't think they have made a programme about it. That's a real shame because as we all know it's not only an amazing album, there's also a great story behind it's making too.

@ Caveman: no, they didn't. And I honestly doubt they'll ever make one. You see, in that series of docs people have to demonstrate, i.e. to actually play live what they played on the album. I wonder how Mike will be able to demonstrate such bits of studio trickery as the 'double speed guitar' or, indeed, the Caveman. The only things he may actually be able to give live demonstrations of, without being accompanied by anyone (as he indeed was on the album) are the opening piano theme and maybe the short acoustic solo which is called "Russian" on TB2003. I guess that they won't be able to build a whole 45-minute instalment of the series just on Mike playing the opening piano theme and that acoustic solo :D

There was a 'making of Tubular Bells' radio programme made, but I don't remember anything having been made for TV. I don't think the format of those programmes is so rigid that Tubular Bells would have to be excluded because Mike can't play it all live - that's part of the challenge of making TV programmes, finding ways round things like that.

Tubular Bells does tend to get neglected when it comes to programmes like that - part of the discussion I had on the phone with someone from Universal was about that, how Dark Side of the Moon has become virtually 'national curriculum' (as they put it), while Tubular Bells seems to be one which people tend to ignore, or even treat as a bit of a joke. What it seems they'd like to do with the upcoming marketing campaign is to encourage the public to look at Tubular Bells in a new light, to rediscover how good it is and hopefully to hook in some new fans too (and get them interested in his other material too). Now would be a perfect time to get a programme of that type made - hopefully all the fuss over the album will attract the right attention!

A thing like that can be a perfect booster for this new re-release of TB...but will be Mike interested in doing such a thing?

I've just googled 'Classic Albums' and found this on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_Albums

I didn't realise they had made so many programmes, but as expected TB is absent.
