The other day, coming home on a bus after a long train journey, I was listening to my beloved ipod (have I ever told you how much I love my ipod??). I was listening to the music on shuffle so I had no idea what was to play next. The bus stopped, passengers got on and off and a man came and sat just in front of me - there were plenty of other available seats. I noticed he was reading a small magazine (bear with me, I know this sounds awful!!;) And then I simply could not believe my eyes - words leapt out of the page he was reading - it was an article headed "Crush Test Dummies" [ a play on the phrase 'Crash Test Dummies'] and what was playing on my ipod? Crash Test Dummies, Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm, remember that? I have not heard heard that track in years- not even when I loaded it onto the ipod. It''s the only song I have of theirs and I love it because it is so strange and the singers voice is so deep.

So
a) Why did he choose to sit there in that seat?
b) Why did I play my ipod at that moment when I had played it sporadically throughout my 5 hour journey?
c) Why did he turn the page at the moment when I was listening to the track?

I think the magazine was Private Eye.

There must be millions of these coincidences happening every day that we don't even notice.

Makes me think there's a lot of truth in the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy!!!

Another time I had been playing Coldplay's Clocks, from Rush of Blood to the Head, incessantly. I was in a supermarket and it was packed. The music was going round in my mind and I became aware that someone was whistling that very track at exactly the point it was at in my head. It was the strangest feeling, as if someone could read my mind! :)  :)

I know it has happened many times to me, but can't really think of them right now.  Figures.  We should document every time it happens.  It must mean something.  Did you speak to him?

Although not quite the same thing, this is something that is happening to me now:

My husband and I go to the grocery store about once every 7 to 10 days.  It is never on the same day of the week and never at the same time.  Totally random.  But, every time we go, and I mean every time, we see the same man!  He is ALWAYS there, walking through the store with his cart - never more than about 10 or 12 items in it.  He is a fairly small/thin man, about 40 I'd say.  Always wears the same clothes and a baseball cap.  We questioned one of the workers about him and they claim they had never seen him ever before.  How can that be?

And by the way, I love my mp3 player also - I got an I Audio U2 - the size of a thumb drive.  Way cool.

I have those synchronicities too, like if I'm driving in my car and feel docile - driving in the same way as usual, people have pulled out of side roads more assertively.  Or the letters on a number plate correspond to what I was thinking before I got in the car.  What the meaning of these coincidences are, I don't know.  But if you look out for them they happen more often.  I'm no expert on this but I know Mike is tuned into that stuff.

Oh, so that's what it's called, synchronicity.  I do get it a lot and music is generally involved somewhere. Thanks for telling us, Dave. Wasn't that an album by the Police? I don't think I ever heard it though.

And Bill Bobaggins, no I did not try to speak to the man. I considered it, but thought he'd probably think I was barking mad!
Btw, the man you keep seeing in your grocery store is probably thinking the same as you 'why do I keep seeing them every time I come here?'!
:D

Ah yes Synchronicity

Here is a link to a good page on the subject:

http://www.crystalinks.com/synchronicity.html

And here is something I found that relates to your iPod:

Music Synchronicity
by Mystic Life

If you'd like to notice synchronicity into your life, I have a suggestion.  This will cost some money, but if you can afford it, it may be worth it for the endless hours of mind-expansion, amazement and guidance (if you are receptive to it).

Try to find a reasonably priced 25 to 300 disc cd player (depending on the size of your collection).   It should be one that allows you to edit out or "delete" songs you don't want to hear.  I have a Sony model that allows this but you may want to check around to see if others have this capability.

After acquiring a cd player, place all of your cds in it and put it on "shuffle" or "random."  If you are open and receptive to the concept of synchronicity, you will eventually be able to notice how the music that is playing will often correspond with what your are doing, thinking, or feeling.

You may have already noticed music synchronicity while listening to the radio.  However, there are many advertisements (which, like everything else, can be sources of synchronicity but are often annoying) and you will not be able to customize the music to your values and beliefs the way you can with a multiple-disc cd player.

Synchronicity of course works with 3 disc and 5 disc cd players, but to give the "voice of synchronicity" a larger "vocabulary" it is helpful to find a player that is capable of holding your entire collection of cds.

I would like to strongly recommend that you edit out songs that don't reflect your values or self-concept.  I believe that the information we take in is a conscious (or subconscious if we're not paying attention) form of programming ourselves, so if we take in songs about death, helplessness, guilt, etc. then we are programming ourselves to reflect these attitudes, and manifest these experiences in our lives.

Additionally, remember that you determine who you are.  Synchronicity may reflect who you are, and it may challenge your ego by presenting options, but you always have free will and are always creating who you want to be.  Just because you are emailing someone you are attracted to and you hear a "love song" doesn't mean that you are destined to be lovers.  Synchronous signs can not tell you who you "should" be.  It is always up to you to decide what you value.

-------
By the way, the album by the Police, you must have heard at least portions of it.  Songs include "Wrapped Around Your Finger", "King of Pain" and "Every Breath You Take".

The other day I sent a text to my friend to tell her I had just purchased my ticket to a show we are going to in November featuring 3 popular Australian artists, Russell Morris, Jim Keays and Darryl Cotton. Russell Morris had performed on his own a few months earlier (for one third the price) and we were both disappointed to have missed it because we LOVE his hit 'The Real Thing'. I said to my friend I was less keen to see this show as with him having to share the stage with two others, he might not even perform it and I would have wasted $45 as I was really only interested in hearing that one song. She said not to worry as it was his biggest hit and there is no doubt he will sing it.

I got in my car ten minutes later to go shopping and turned on the tape player which already had a tape sitting in it, the first song to play, 'The Real Thing!' Ooh mow mow mow mow.

Jung thought this stuff was very profound; and the I-Ching seems related to it also. I never managed to suppress my left-brain thinking enough to go along properly with it; and yet ... and yet .... draw closer to the fire and hear my tale....

I have a friend in Canada whom I haven't been in touch with for a long time - more than a year. A few nights ago I had a startlingly realistic dream about her that I remembered with great clarity when I woke up. I'd never had any such dream before. That morning there was an email from her waiting for me. It turned out that while I was asleep (8-hour time difference) she'd been going through some bills and documents and had found an old photograph of me, completely out of place and unexpected. Surprised, she took it out, put it back where it ought to be, and sent me the email that I found when I awoke.

Spooky or what? (Sound of tree branch tapping on window pane)

"Synchronicity" is a worthwhile album, even if the title song has been ruined by the image from the video (String singing with garbage blowing in the air; like a rejected Duran Duran video concept! ).

Between "Synchronicity" and "Ghost in the Machine" (with great cover art, by the way) are enough excellent tracks for one masterpiece of an album.

I think if you are susceptible to this synchronicity thing there's little you can do to stop it. Just go with it and life will never be dull...

Love the part about 'String'!! Very funny. He does seem to take himself too seriously, or at least he did at times. And btw, wasn't there a connexion - guitarwise- between Mike and Andy Summers of the Police way back? Also I know Andy is a good photographer who has shown some of his work, couldn't he get involved with the cover issue for Slightly Made.. I mean Light and Shade? It seems a little controversial here at the mo.

String? A mere typo.  heh.

strange.............. he he

well i had another thing that happend with my wife and i..
There we was on a supermarked, they are known to play polka music so then i had my own song in my head...
I had Bad boys bad boys (the inner circle), this theme they had on the american police series "Cops" in the 90's in my head..
And the strange moment became out from the blue. From the right moment i sing a little, (not loud) of course!! "bad boys, bad boys na na na na.. my wife sung it too!!!! We have never listen to this song together!!!! We had not heard this song this day. We were on this supremarked that only play boring polka supermarked music, and suddenly we sing a song at the same time!!
funny i think  :p

My friend just told me a story in connection with synchronicity on the same day this topic was born. ;)

Yes bee, I know a few Sting tracks, but I guess everyone does after watching Live 8!  Interesting avatar name, reminds me of a happy bee buzzing round a sunny garden  :)   Apparently synchronicity shows that you "look into the silence" and are aware of abstract things, I think someone mentioned about radio shows where a song relates to your state of mind, something I have experienced too.  It is weird stuff and tends to go unnoticed.

This would account for the, (often commented on), vacant look on my face!! ;)

Tonight I was going through random photograph albums (from before I was born) with my dad, we stumbled upon a picture of Mont St Michel, he said 'Mont St Michel' and I asked 'how did you know that?' He responded with, 'I was there!' I thought he had recognised that Mont St Michel was playing downstairs but he'd never heard it in his life!

Spooky..................... :O

How's this for a coincidence. I was doing the celebrity compatibilty quiz in the other thread and after I finished I clicked on 'most compatible' to have a look, it gave me three names, two I didn't know and the third was Freddie Prinz. Now I haven't heard anything about him since he was in Scooby Doo and married Sarah Michelle Geller. It was 3:25pm and Judge Judy was due on in 5 minutes so I turned the tele on and caught the end of Entertainment Tonight and they were talking about Freddie Prinz!
